TONIGHT: The Mudcats continue a six game home stand tonight with the first game of a three game series versus the Winston-Salem Dash at Five County Stadium in Zebulon.
ICYMI: Joantgel Segovia went 3-for-5 with three doubles, both Cooper Hummel and Rob Henry hit home runs and Nathan Kirby totaled a career high six strikeouts as the Mudcats closed out a series victory with a 13-4 home win versus the Wood Ducks on Thursday night at Five County Stadium.
ABOUT THE LAST ONE: The Mudcats scored a season high 13 runs while matching a season high with 15 hits in their series finale victory against the Wood Ducks last night. The home win clinched a two games to one series victory for Carolina and pulled them within 3.5 games of first in the first half Southern Division standings.
VS. DASH: The Mudcats opened the season by winning three of four versus the Dash at Five County Stadium, but have gone just 1-6 (all seven games in Winston-Salem) since this season versus the Dash. Tonight's game is the 12th of 21 meetings between the two teams this season. Winston-Salem leads the overall season series 7-4... Carolina finished the 2017 season going 19-5 against the Dash, including a perfect 13-0 record when playing the Dash at home in 2017.
STARTING OFF: RHP Braden Webb has tonight's series opening start against the visiting Dash. Webb is currently 3-4 with a 4.50 ERA, 44 strikeouts, 23 walks and a .239 average against over 44.0 innings and 10 starts this season. Webb last pitched on June 3 in Winston-Salem and ended up taking the loss after allowing four runs (all in the 3rd inning) on six hits over 6.0 innings pitched. He also struck out eight batters his last time out and has totaled 34 strikeouts over his last 28.0 innings... LHP Tanner Banks will go the Dash in tonight's series opener and enters at 4-2 with a 2.86 ERA. He has also totaled 36 strikeouts, nine walks and a .252 average against over 44.0 innings this season. Banks has won four straight starts, with his most recent victory coming against the Mudcats on June 2 in Winston-Salem (6.0 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 10 SO).
WHERE THEY RANK: LHP Cam Roegner is currently 2nd in the Carolina League in earned run average (1.85). Roegner is also tied for 2nd in wins (6) and 4th innings pitched (63.1)... SS Luis Aviles Jr. is currently tied for 2nd in the CL in stolen bases (15)... INF Ronnie Gideon (75) and INF/OF Tucker Neuhaus (74) and are both tied for the CL lead in most strikeouts... RHP Marcos Diplan is currently tied for 2nd in the CL in most walks (34)... RHP Luke Barker is tied for the CL lead in games (19), 3rd in lowest average against (.158) and 1st in fewest baserunners/9ip ratio (7.76).
STINGY MAY: Carolina pitchers combined to pitch to a Carolina League best 2.65 ERA in May (258.1 IP, 105 BB, 255 SO, .225 AVG). They also went 16-13 in May, while the offense totaled 20 home runs, 4.48 runs/game and a .245 average (.702 OPS).
MUDDIES ON THE POND: Carolina is batting a CL low .240 with runners on base. The Mudcats are also 8th in the CL when batting with runners in scoring position (.252) and 7th when batting with RISP/2-outs (.234) this season.
INTRA-DIV: The Mudcats are currently just 20-26 and own a Carolina League Southern Division worst .435 percentage in games against their own division this season. Carolina is currently 0-6 in games at Down East and just 1-6 games in Winston-Salem this season. The Mudcats are also 9th in the CL overall for worst in-division winning percentage (.435).
GOT HEEEM: Max McDowell leads MiLB catchers in most caught steals (32) and is 2nd in caught stealing/stolen base efficiency (.552) for catchers with at least 30 attempts against in all of MiLB... He totaled 18 CS (.450) during his first season with the AZL Brewers in 2015. He then totaled 54 CS (.443) in 2016 with Wisconsin and 31 CS (.556) last season with Carolina.
HITS AND Ks: The Carolina offense has totaled 116 more strikeouts than hits (581 SO, 465 H) so far this season. Carolina's difference in strikeouts over hits is currently the 3rd largest in MiLB. Since 1991, only the 2017 and 2007 Mudcats have finished a season with more strikeouts than hits. Carolina totaled 164 more strikeouts than hits in 2017 (1,245 SO [franchise record], 1,081 H) and 70 more strikeouts than hits in 2007 (1,219 SO, 1,149 H).
AWARDS SZN: Keston Hiura was named the Carolina League's Player of the Month for the month of May on June 5 by Minor League Baseball. Hiura was also named the Brewers Minor League Player of the Month for May by Milwaukee on June 4... Carolina has also had three players earn CL Weekly Player/Pitcher of the Week awards this season; Ryan Aguilar - April 16-22, Weston Wilson - April 23-29 and Cam Roegner - May 7-13.
