Frederick Keys News Release
FREDERICK, MD - The Frederick Keys received seven dominant innings from Zac Lowther en route to a 4-0 win over the Salem Red Sox on Wednesday night at Nymeo Field. Lowther and Tyler Erwin collaborated on a two-hitter, while the Keys grabbed their seventh shutout win of the year.
Lowther (4-2) tossed seven shutout innings of two-hit baseball to earn his first victory since June 21 against Salem (56-63, 24-27). The left-hander struck out eight and walked two to trim his Carolina League ERA to 2.50. Over his last five starts, Lowther has allowed just five earned runs over 31.1 innings and has struck out 34.
It was a scoreless game until the fifth inning. Jake Ring singled with one out and stole second base. He then advanced to third on a Preston Palmeiro double off Kevin McAvoy before Craig Gentry brought him home with a sacrifice fly. Continuing his Major League rehab assignment, Gentry would finish the game 1-2 with a single and an RBI.
Frederick (57-63, 22-29) would add a run in each of the next two frames. With two outs, T.J. Nichting extended the Keys lead to 2-0 on a solo home run to center field. Daniel Fajardo then launched a solo homer to lead off the seventh to add an insurance run.
In the eighth, the Keys scored their fourth run. Randolph Gassaway singled and moved to third on a Jomar Reyes infield single and a throwing error. In his second straight at-bat, Nichting drove in a run by plating Gassaway on a single.
Erwin threw the final two innings to pick up his 15th save. The southpaw walked one and struck out two. McAvoy (1-3) was tagged with the loss allowing two runs on five hits in six innings. He walked three and struck out three.
The Keys and Red Sox conclude their series on Thursday. Frederick will send right-hander Cristian Alvarado (10-9, 4.22) to the mound against Red Sox right-hander Denyi Reyes (1-1, 2.53). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and the game can be heard on frederickkeys.com and the TuneIn Radio app. For tickets, fans can call 301-815-9939 or visit frederickkeys.com.
