BUIES CREEK, N.C. - J.B. Bukauskas tossed seven brilliant innings against Winston-Salem on Wednesday, as the Astros blanked the Dash 5-0 on Wednesday night at Jim Perry Stadium.
A first-round pick out of UNC in 2017, Bukauskas (2-0) allowed just one hit - a Luis Gonzalez single in the fourth - and one walk en route to his career-high seven innings of work. The Astros right-hander also struck out five while facing one more than the minimum in the outing.
After a scoreless first inning, the Astros (31-19, 68-51) went ahead for good in the second against Dash starter Kyle Kubat (6-2). Chuckie Robinson led off the frame with a single, and, after a wild pitch, Bryan De La Cruz doubled to put runners on second and third with nobody out. Jake Adams and Orlando Marquez proceeded to smack back-to-back sacrifice flies to put the Astros ahead 2-0.
In the fifth, Buies Creek posted another two-run inning. Following a Jonathan Arauz walk and a Jacob Meyers single, Corey Julks smacked a run-scoring, ground-rule double to left-center to up the Astros' lead to three. Then, Osvaldo Duarte followed with an RBI groundout to second.
The reigning Carolina League Pitcher of the Week, Kubat tossed six innings and allowed nine hits and four runs while walking one and striking out three.
Buies Creek plated its last run in the eighth inning on an RBI single from Bryan De La Cruz against right-handed reliever Devan Watts, who registered two innings of work.
The Dash's (30-18, 71-47) other two hits on Wednesday were a Gavin Sheets single in the eighth and a Luis Robert double in the ninth, with both hits coming against Carlos Sanabria, who tossed two scoreless innings. The middle match marked the seventh time the Dash have been shut out this year.
Winston-Salem now wraps up its three-game series against Buies Creek on Thursday at 6 p.m. Pregame coverage begins at 5:45 p.m., and fans can catch all of the action on wsdash.com/broadcast and the TuneIn Radio.
Following their three-game set with Buies Creek, the Dash return to BB&T Ballpark on Friday for a four-game series with the Wilmington Blue Rocks. Promotions for the homestand include postgame fireworks and a Daddy-Daughter Date Night on Friday, and a City of the Arts celebration on Saturday. Kids can run the bases after each of the weekend contests, and the series finale is a Lowes Foods Family Sunday. For tickets and more information, call the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visit wsdash.com.
