Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
FREDERICK, MD - Frederick starter Ryohei Tanaka dominated the Pelicans over a career-high eight shutout innings, and top Baltimore prospect Manny Machado's RBI triple in the third inning was enough as the Keys blanked the Pelicans 2-0 in Friday night's series opener of a brief three-game Myrtle Beach road trip to Frederick's Harry Grove Stadium.
Tanaka pitched with traffic on the basepaths in five of his eight innings but never really ran into serious trouble. Myrtle Beach put men on via five hits but never had multiple baserunners in an inning and never had a runner advance past second base. Tanaka pitched past doubles in the third, fourth, and sixth innings and stranded a single man in four different innings. Pelicans hitters struck out three times against the Ishikawa, Japan native, and not a single Myrtle Beach bat was able to work a walk. Tanaka (7-3) put 75 of his 99 pitches into the strike zone in the win
In the third, Myrtle Beach starter Barret Loux retured the first two men he faced before two of the Orioles' brightest young stars came through for the Keys. Second baseman Jonathan Schoop singled to center field, and Machado followed with a deep drive to the wall in center that bounded off the fence and past Pelicans center fielder Ryan Strausborger into the outfield grass. Schoop scored from first easily, and Machado slid into third with his first Carolina League triple.
Frederick added another run on three consecutive one-out singles in the seventh against Loux (8-4) who posted his fourth double-digit strikeout performance of the season with ten Ks. Myrtle Beach's offense was shut out for the fourth time in the big right-hander's last seven starts. Reigning Carolina League Player of the Week Jared Bolden, held without multiple hits Thursday night for the first time in nine games, got back onto his recent multi-knock kick with two of the Pelicans' five hits.
Sean Gleason (S, 27) retired the side in order in the ninth to add to his Carolina League lead in saves.
The Pelicans look to even the series Saturday evening when they send lefty Robbie Ross (9-3, 2.33) to the hill against fellow southpaw Nick Haughian (7-4, 3.75) with the middle game scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
