Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
Salem, VA - The Hillcats jumped out to an early lead for the second straight night with two runs in the first inning, but the Red Sox came back with six unanswered runs, going on to win 6-4 clinching the series win over Lynchburg.
Marcus Lemon singled and Andrelton Simmons walked to start off the ball game. Phil Gosselin, like the night before, came up with runners at first and second with nobody out and put down a perfect sacrifice bunt. Two batters later, Joe Leonard grounded a ball into left field to put the Hillcats up 2-0.
The Red Sox weren't down long, scoring three runs on three hits in the bottom of the first. Derrik Gibson and Bryce Brentz both contributed RBI singles.
Salem took control of the game in the third inning with three more runs on four more hits. The rally ended with a two-out RBI single for Miles Head who was thrown out trying to get to second base.
The Hillcats got one back in the fourth, but continued to trail 6-3 heading into the ninth.
With runners at first and second and two outs in the ninth, L.V. Ware double down the third base line bringing home Leonard. Ware, representing the tying run stood at third base for Marcus Lemon. Lemon popped out to second base and the Red Sox held on to win 6-4.
RHP Ryan Pressly allowed three runs through five innings, earning the win for the Red Sox. Hillcats' starter Aaron Shafer lasted just four innings, his shortest outing of the year, giving up six runs, five earned, and took the loss. It wasn't pretty in the ninth but LHP Will Latimer was good enough for the save, surrendering one run on three hits.
The Hillcats are now 9-19 in the second half after the loss. Salem improved to 13-15 with the win.
The series finale is set for tomorrow at 6:05 pm. The Hillcats will throw LHP Chris Masters (5-5) against Salem's LHP Stolmy Pimentel (0-2).
