Frederick Keys News Release
On a scorching hot day in Frederick, MD, Ryohei Tanaka cooled down the Pelicans' bats as he tossed a career-high eight innings en route to his seventh victory of the year. Despite striking out 14 times on Friday night, the Keys (17-10, 58-38) were able to plate two runs and take the opener of the three-game series, 2-0.
Tanaka and Barret Loux traded scoreless innings until the Keys put two hits together in the third and took a 1-0 lead. With one down in the third, 2B Jonathan Schoop lined a single into center field for the first Frederick hit of the evening. SS Manny Machado followed up Schoop's single with a big swing of the bat. Machado lined a Loux pitch off the left field wall. Schoop scored from first and Machado slid into third with a RBI triple.
The one-run lead proved to be enough for Tanaka as he continued to deal into the night. The Pelicans never had more than one man on base in the game as Tanaka scattered five hits through eight innings of work.
Frederick added an insurance run in the seventh. With one out, 3B Dale Mollenhauer lined a single into center. 1B Michael Flacco stepped to the plate next. With Flacco at the dish, Mollenhauer stole second and third. With the infield drawn in, Flacco hit a line drive single into left-center to put the Keys on top by two runs.
Loux exited the game after 6 1/3 innings of work. On the night, he allowed two runs on five hits while striking out 10 and walking two.
Sean Gleason entered in the top of the ninth for Tanaka. Gleason retired the side in order as he notched his 27th save of the season. Tanaka allowed five hits over eight scoreless innings as he improved to 7-3 on the season.
The Keys will turn to LHP Nick Haughian (7-4, 3.75) on Saturday evening. LHP Robbie Ross (9-3, 2.33) will oppose Haughian as he is scheduled to take the hill for Myrtle Beach in game two of the three-game series. First pitch from Harry Grove Stadium is set for 6:00 p.m.
Saturday night is Super Hero Night in Frederick. All your favorite super heroes will be in the house including Batman, Superman, Spiderman, and two Transformers (Optimus Prime and Bumble Bee). In addition, the first 1,000 fans through the gates on Saturday will receive a trucker hat courtesy of the Comfort Inn across from the Westview Promenade. Gates open at 5:00 p.m.
