Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
Louisville out-hit Pawtucket 17-to-7 on an afternoon where the two teams were tied 1-1 after the first inning, but the Bats took control shortly thereafter to secure their second straight win, 7-2, to begin the series.
Ryan Lavarnway, Hector Luna and Nate Spears all had two-hit games for the PawSox with Lavarnway and Luna each recording RBI hits on the afternoon. Lavarnway's first-inning RBI tied the game 1-0 after Tony Pena Jr. surrendered a run to Louisville in his first inning of work, and Luna had a two-out base-hit in the eighth inning to make it a 6-2 ballgame, but by then the game was already out of reach.
Pena Jr. earns the loss and drop to 7-5 on the season. He allowed nine hits in five innings and left the game trailing 4-1 after allowing four earned runs.
Louisville's Dave Sappelt wasted no time extending his hitting streak to seven games. In the first inning he recorded the first of his four base-hits as part of a 4-for-5 afternoon. Sappelt has now hit safely in 16 of his last 17 games in which he is 29-for-72 (.403), and over his hitting streak he is hitting a sweltering 16-for-30 (.533).
The PawSox and Louisville will play the third game of a four-game series Monday evening with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Pawtucket's Kyle Weiland (8-7, 3.15 ERA) will take the mound against the Bats' Edinson Volquez (2-0, 2.18 ERA). This will be Weiland's first start at McCoy Stadium since being optioned from Boston July 26.
