Gwinnett Tops Tribe 11-5

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- Each of the first eight hitters in the Gwinnett batting order recorded a hit, with third baseman Brandon Hicks recording four hits and driving in three runs, while center fielder Matt Young, first baseman Mauro Gomez and left fielder Wilkin Ramirez all tallied three base hits, to lead Gwinnett to an 11-5 win over the Indianapolis Indians on Sunday afternoon at Coolray Field.

With the defeat, Indianapolis falls to 57-53 this season, while the victory improves Gwinnett's record to 60-48 on the year. The win also evens the series at 1-1, as well as the season series at 3-3.

The Braves offense scored 11 runs on 20 hits during the contest, with the majority of both of those categories coming between the second and fourth frames. Ten of the 11 scores and 15 of the 20 base knocks were registered in that time frame.

Indianapolis got on the board early with a two-run first frame. After 2B Josh Harrison drew a free pass, LF John Bowker blasted his 13th home run of the year to right to give the Indians an early 2-0 lead.

Gwinnett however, would answer by totaling ten runs in the subsequent three innings. The Braves' first score came in the second when Gomez led off with a double to left and moved to third on Hicks' single, before coming home on 2B Ruben Gotay's RBI base knock to cut the deficit to one.

A five-run rally would follow in the next frame to swing the advantage into Gwinnett's favor. After base hits from Young and SS Tyler Pastornicky, RF Stefan Gartrell drove both home on a double to give the Braves a 3-2 lead. Gartrell then moved to third on Gomez's base knock and came across on Hicks' second RBI single in as many frames.

Gwinnett was not done in the third however, as Ramirez's infield base hit loaded the bases for C Wilkin Castillo. Castillo then delivered with a two-run base knock to left to plate Gomez and Hicks, as well as cap the rally.

Four more scores followed in the fourth, which began with singles by Young and Pastornicky, while Gomez walked to load the bases. Hicks then followed through with his third run-scoring hit in a three inning span, driving home both Young and Pastornicky, while a base hit from Ramirez sent in Gomez and Hicks to move the margin to 10-2.

Indianapolis would plate a single tally in both the fifth and sixth to make it 10-4. CF Gorkys Hernandez led off the fifth with a walk and got to third on pinch hitter Wyatt Toregas' single, before he came home on a force out. All-Star 1B Matt Hague began the sixth with a single and took second on a ground out before he was driven in on an RBI base hit to left from RF Miles Durham.

Hicks (4-for-5, 2 R, 3 RBI), Young (3-for-5, 2 R, 1 RBI), Gomez (3-for-3, 3 R, 1 2B, 2 BB), Ramirez (3-for-5, 2 RBI), Castillo (3-for-5, 1 R, 2 RBI) and Pastornicky (2-for-6, 2 R) all recorded multi-hit efforts for the Braves, while Hague (3-for-3, 1 R, 1 BB) was the only Indians batter to collect multiple base knocks. The 20 hits allowed by Indianapolis were a season-high, topping the previous mark of 19 that Durham set on April 30.

Indians starter Brad Lincoln (3.0 IP, 11 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 3 SO) was pinned with the loss to fall to 7-8 after giving up six earned runs on 11 hits in three innings, while relievers Steven Jackson (2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB) and Justin Thomas (2.0 IP, 3 H) each turned in two solid innings in support.

Gwinnett RHP Julio Teheran (6.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 1 SO) earned the win to notch his International League-leading 12th victory after giving up four earned runs on six hits in six frames, with relief pitchers Arodys Vizcaino (1.0 IP), Ben Swaggerty (2.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB) finishing the final three innings.

Indianapolis and Gwinnett will face off on Monday evening, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The Indians are expected to send LHP Justin Wilson to the mound, while Gwinnett is expected to counter with LHP Mike Minor.
