Victoria HabourCats News Release
In a very short few days, the Victoria HarbourCats have gone from a tie for first place to looking for a way to regroup with a few days off ahead.
In front of a hearty crowd of 1,056 at Sports Traders Diamond at Royal Athletic Park and in a swift-moving game that took just 2:34 to complete, the HarbourCats lost their fourth West Coast League game in a row on Wednesday, and third straight in being swept at home by the Bellingham Bells, in dropping a 7-2 outing against their West Division rivals.
The four-game losing streak follows a three-game string in which the HarbourCats moved to 5-3 in the standings -- that mark now stands at 5-7. The Bells are 8-3.
Nate Anderson (Bellevue Community College), the nine-hole hitter for the Bells, hit a home run for Bellingham as part of a 10-hit barrage. The Bells scored twice in the third, once in the fifth, three times in the sixth, and added another in the seventh.
In the error column, the HarbourCats committed four, three more than the Bells. Eder Erives (Arizona State) was the winning pitcher.
With days off looming Thursday and Friday, Victoria starter Mikey Wright pitched deep into the game, going six innings and picking up his first loss -- six hits allowed, six runs (four earned), and three apiece in the walks and strikeouts departments in his 94 pitches. Wright was tagged with his first loss of the season.
Sean Watkins saw his first duty on the mound for the HarbourCats and gave up three hits and an earned run in two innings, before Carson Schneider capped the pitching with one scoreless inning.
Alex DeGoti supplied one of few offensive bright spots for the HarbourCats, blasting a solo home run to left field in the third inning. In the seventh inning, Alan Baldwin's pinch-hit triple scored Hunter Mercado-Hood -- one of seven hits the HarbourCats mustered. Victoria hitters fanned nine times, compared to just four strikeouts of Bellingham hitters.
The HarbourCats now have two days off from game action -- but a meet-the-players event is planned for 5pm-7:30pm in the meeting room at View Royal Casino on Thursday night. More players are due in this weekend -- first baseman Gabe Clark, catcher Aaron Barnett, and catcher Jake Lesinski.
