YAKIMA, Wash. - The Yakima Valley Pippins returned to the win column Wednesday night with an 8-3 win over the Northwest Honkers in front of a crowd of 725 at County Stadium.

The Pippins (6-7 overall, 4-5 West Coast League) picked up five runs in the first two innings, partially with the help of Honkers errors. A pair of miscues, including a dropped fly ball with the bases loaded and two outs, brought home the first three runs of the ball game, all unearned against starter J.D. Scholten. The Pippins added two more runs in the 2nd, including an RBI double by Ryan Rosa, who went 4-5 in his second game with the team.

"I wanted to come in and just start seeing the ball," said Rosa. "I haven't played much during the Cal Poly season. So when I got up in here, just stay relaxed, clear my mind and just see balls I can drive. And today and yesterday, that's what I got."

The Honkers (9-9) got back in the game with a two-run 4th inning against Pippins starter Austin Woodward, before adding another in the 5th against reliever Austin Hansen to cut the Pippins lead to 5-3.

As the Honkers got closer, the Pippins pulled away again in the 6th, using an RBI groundout from Jake Roberts and a two-run single by Randy Fuller to restore a five-run lead at 8-3. That would be all the Pippins needed, as the bullpen retired 10 of the final 11 hitters to secure a victory and even the series at one game apiece.

The Pippins will go for consecutive wins for the first time all season tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. in the series finale against the Honkers. Connor Lau will make his first start of the summer after three relief outings for the Pippins earlier in the season.
