August 25, 2022 - Carolina League (CarL)
Fayetteville Woodpeckers News Release
Fayetteville, NC - The Fayetteville Woodpeckers (48-67, 17-33) not only ended their franchise-record 11-game losing streak, but also shutout the Carolina League's top team, blanking the Charleston RiverDogs (77-39, 31-19) 3-0 on Wednesday night at Segra Stadium. The shutout victory was the fifth this season and Fayetteville's first win since August 10th.
After a pair of scoreless innings to start the night, Jackson Loftin provided the go-ahead swing with a solo homer in the bottom of the third off Charleston starter Ben Peoples (L, 5-5). The blast landed in the left-field bullpen and was the second this season for Loftin, both of which have come at home.
Carlos Calderon carried the lead into the fifth, pitching 4.2 scoreless innings and allowed just three hits while striking out four. The scoreless outing was the first for Calderon since June 26th. Ronny Garcia took over from the bullpen and got the final out of the fifth inning, stranding two runners on base and keeping the 1-0 lead intact.
Nolan DeVos (W, 1-0) entered in the sixth for his Woodpeckers debut and didn't allow a hit. The 2022 5th round pick from Davidson issued three walks but stranded all baserunners thanks to five strikeouts over two scoreless innings.
Fayetteville added their final two runs in the bottom of the eighth, singling five times against reliever Jonny Cuevas. Zach Dezenzo ended his hitless day with an RBI liner into right field that scored Jacob Melton, and Tyler Whitaker followed two at bats later with an RBI base knock that made it 3-0.
Tyler Guilfoil (SV, 1) also made his Fayetteville debut and was handed the closer role from the bullpen in the eighth. The 8th rounder from the University of Kentucky pitched around a leadoff single in the eighth thanks to an inning-ending double play and locked the game down in the ninth with a pair of strikeouts. He struck out a total of three hitters over two innings, walked one, and earned the save.
The series continues Thursday night at Segra Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 pm. Fayetteville is scheduled to start RHP A.J. Blubaugh in his Single-A debut and the RiverDogs will counter with RHP Cole Wilcox.
