Lopsided Affairs End in Split

The Keys sped out of the gate in the opener registering a season high 17 hits en route to a 9-3 drubbing of Winston-Salem on Memorial Day at BB&T Ballpark. Unfortunately the Dash turned the tables on the Keys as Frederick fell in the nightcap 7-1.

Frederick scored three runs in the first inning of the opener as CF Johnny Ruettiger, RF Jeremy Nowak and 2B Ty Kelly had hits in succession to open the game. The Keys had four instances of three consecutive hits in seven innings in the opener.

The Keys led 6-2 into the fifth inning and blew the game open with another three-run rally. The finishing touches to the rally were put on by Kelly who doubled home two more runs. In the opener Kelly went 3-for-4 with three doubles and three RBI's. The three doubles were the first time a Key has registered three doubles in a game this season. The Keys had a season high six doubles in the game.

RHP Tyler Wilson picked up his first Carolina League win as well. Wilson went five innings for the victory after working through a tumultuous first inning. Leading 3-1 with the bases loaded and two outs, Dash RF Nick Ciolli lined out to end the inning and Wilson settled down after that. He gave way to RHP Brandon Erbe who overpowered the Dash striking out five batters in two innings.

The Keys led early in game two as well. Ruettiger, who scored four runs on the evening, was driven home on a one-out RBI single by Kelly. But Frederick registered just two hits after the first inning.

The Keys held the lead until the fourth inning. With one on and one out, Dash C Mike Blanke hit a tailor-made double play ball to third base but Keys 3B Mike Mosby sailed the throw to second base into RF. A double play would have ended the inning. Instead the Dash sent ten men to the plate and registered five runs in the inning. Winston-Salem added two runs in the fifth inning in the 7-1 contest.

Frederick is right back at it Tuesday, May 29th at 7:00 p.m. with LHP Rick Zagone on the hill. Airtime is 6:40 p.m. on 1450-AM The Source and wthu.org.
