Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release

BOUNCED IN RUBBER MATCH: After more than a week of clutch hitting, the Wilmington Blue Rocks were due to have an off night. Such was the case on Sunday as the Blue Crew went just 2-for-18 (.111) with runners in scoring position and stranded 11 men during a 3-1 loss to the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (24-23). The rubber match setback gave the weekend set to the Fightin' Feathers.

RUBBER OR GLUE?: The Rocks fell to 1-4 in rubber matches with the loss.

SERIESOUS MOMENT: Vance Wilson's club had been unbeaten in its prior four series, amassing three wins and one draw in that time. The Blue Crew fell short of its first three-series winning streak in over a year since May 16-25, 2011.

FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING: Wilmington lost for the first time in five games with Juan Graterol as the starting catcher. The team has a 2.25 ERA in those games.

MY BAD: For the first time this season, the Blue Crew has made a miscue in five straight games. Last night, Brian Fletcher (throwing) and Alex McClure (fielding) both were charged with errors. Despite his fourth error on the season, McClure still owns the best fielding percentage among CL shortstops at .975. As a team, Wilmington leads the loop with a .972 fielding percentage.

RISPY BUSINESS: The Blue Rocks scored just five runs over the three-game series. During that time, the team went just 3-for-28 (.107) with men in scoring position. The Blue Crew left a man in scoring position in every inning but one on Sunday. No CL squad owns a worse contact clip with men at second and/or third than Wilmington (.235).

WELCOME TO WILMINGTON: Edwin Carl tossed a perfect eighth inning in his Advanced-A debut, striking out one.

ROAD WARRIOR: Sam Runion hurled two scoreless innings of relief as well. He has only allowed one run in seven appearances and 11.2 innings on the road this season for a 0.77 ERA away from Frawley.

PLUG ONE LEAK, ANOTHER OPENS: After consecutive days of struggles in the upper tier of the lineup, the Rocks' top three stickers combined to go 5-for-13 (.385) with two walks last night. The rest of the lineup went a collective 1-for-18 (.056). Over the first two days of the series, the top four Wilmington hitters struggled during a 3-for-29 (.103) performance.

INDIVISIBLE: The Blue Rocks stand 4.5 games back of first-place Lynchburg in the Northern Division. However, Wilmington has no meetings with the Hillcats until the second half. In fact, entering tonight 19 of Wilmington's 22 remaining games this half will pit it against Southern Division squads. Entering today, the North has a composite record of 87-99 (.468) while the South stands at 100-88 (.532). Three of the four teams in the North have a losing record compared with winning marks for three of the four in the South.

TODAY'S FOE: The Mudcats have lost five straight games and nine of their last 11. Pitching has been the biggest problem of late with opponents scoring at least six runs in each of the Mudcats' last six games. In fact, foes have plated at least five scores in nine of Carolina's last 11. As a result, the Mudcats' team ERA has shot up to 3.84 making it the third-worst mark in the CL.
