August 4, 2015 - Southern League (SL1)
Biloxi Shuckers News Release
MOBILE, AL - The Milwaukee Brewers announced today that Biloxi right-handed starting pitcher Jorge Lopez has been named the organization's Pitcher of the Month for July. Lopez made five starts during the month and was 3-2 with a 2.53 ERA (32.0 IP, 9 ER) with 8 walks and 32 strikeouts. Lopez repeats as the Brewers Pitcher of the Month after winning the award in June. A Biloxi starting pitcher has won the award in three of the first four months of the season, with RHP Brooks Hall getting the nod in April.
Over June and July, the 22-year-old from Cayey, Puerto Rico is 7-2 with a 1.61 ERA in 10 starts, posting 61 strikeouts and just 19 walks. Lopez has held the opposition to a miniscule .197 batting average. His seven wins since June 2 rank T-4th in minor league baseball, and 1.61 ERA ranks T-10th.
Overall this season, Lopez is 10-4 with a 2.52 ERA, achieving 104 strikeouts and just 41 walks. Lopez became just the second Southern League hurler to reach 10 wins on Saturday night against Jackson by matching a season-high with eight shutout innings during the 2-0 victory at MGM Park. The Brewers second round selection (70th overall) in 2011 ranks fourth in the Southern League in ERA, second in wins, third in strikeouts, fourth in WHIP (1.14) and second in opponents' batting average (.211). Lopez has won 10 games and produced 100 strikeouts in back-to-back seasons with the Brewers organization.
Lopez is a member of a Biloxi starting rotation that has a league-best 3.29 ERA and 41 quality starts, including 11 from Lopez. Tyler Wagner leads the way with 13.
Lopez is scheduled to make his next start on Friday night at MGM Park, during the opener of the 10-game homestand and five-game series against the Mississippi Braves. First pitch is set for 7:10 pm.
The Shuckers' season-long 10-game homestand against the Mississippi Braves, August 7-11 and Pensacola Blue Wahoos, August 12-16 begins on Friday. The homestand features Marty Wilson Night on Friday, Post-Game fireworks on Saturday and an appearance by dancing bat boy, Breakin' BBoy McCoy, Bark In The Park, presented by Mars PetCare and Pedigree, as well as a Youth Baseball Giveaway (first 1,000 kids 12 years old and younger), courtesy of the Mississippi Forestry Division on Saturday, August 15.
