Great Lakes Loons News Release
MIDLAND, MI - The Great Lakes Loons sparked a rally in the seventh inning, but were unable to keep up with the visiting West Michigan Whitecaps Thursday night, who defeated the home team by the score of 6-3 at Dow Diamond in front of 3,832 Loons fans.
Down 2-0 with only two hits through six innings, the Loons bats came together in the seventh for three hits to start a late rally. The Loons designated hitter Joe Winker led off the frame with a double, his 16th of the year, and moved to third on a fly out from O'Koyea Dickson before being brought home by Jesse Bosnik's infield single. Pratt Maynard knocked a double to the visitor's bullpen, still in-play, to allow Bosnik to score all the way from first and tie the game at two runs apiece.
Unfortunately for the Loons, the Whitecaps answered in the following half inning with two runs of their own to build another lead, one they did not relinquish.
"We battled and got back in the game in the seventh inning," Loons manager John Shoemaker said after the game. "But to West Michigan's credit, they executed some sacrifice bunts and they got their runners in from third base when they needed to."
The Loons made another charge at a game-tying rally in the eighth inning, but plated only one run in the frame on an infield single by Winker that allowed Jesus Arredondo to slide past for the Loons third and final run.
Jarret Martin started on the hill for Great Lakes and allowed two runs to the Whitecaps through his first seven innings of work, but gave up two more in the eighth, finishing at 101 pitches. Martin gave the Loons the quality start they were looking for, having depleted many of their arms in Wednesday's five-hour 16-inning game, but was charged with his third loss of the season.
Raydel Sanchez pitched the final 1.2 innings, during which he allowed two runs on one hit and two walks. Whitecaps starter Wilsen Palacios was awarded the win, his third.
The Loons (21-20) return for the rubber game of their three-game series with the West Michigan Whitecaps on Friday morning at Dow Diamond for School Kids Day, with a scheduled first pitch at 10:35 a.m. Starting for the Loons will be RHP Jose Dominguez (1-1, 3.33) against the Whitecaps RHP Marcelo Carreno (0-2, 3.66).
The Great Lakes Loons are a sixth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and are in the middle of their 5th Anniversary Celebration, which kicked off in August 2011 and will continue throughout the 2012 season. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
