South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
SOUTH BEND, IN - Tyler Green tossed a career-best 5.2 innings and the bullpen did the rest as the South Bend Silver Hawks (22-19) defeated the Lake County Captains (20-20) 2-1 Thursday afternoon in front of 4,008 fans at Coveleski Stadium. The Silver Hawks win sets up a rubber match Friday at Coveleski Stadium.
Green (1-2) struck out a season-high six batters and earned his first win of the 2012 season. Taylor Siemens and Matt Sample combined to hurl 3.1 scoreless innings out of the Silver Hawks bullpen. Sample worked a three-up, three-down ninth inning and tallied his third save.
The Silver Hawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead against Captains right-hander Felix Sterling. Matt Helm hit a two-out RBI double to left-center in the first inning and Marc Bourgeois started the second inning with a solo home run to right field. For Bourgeois, it was his team-leading fourth home run.
The Captains scored their lone run in the fourth inning against Green. With the bases loaded, Todd Hankins hit an RBI fielder's choice to first base. At one point, the Captains had the bases loaded with nobody out and scored just the one run. Green struck out Leonardo Castillo and Robel Garcia to get out of the inning.
Sterling (2-2) got the loss for Lake County and allowed two earned runs on four hits over 5.2 innings.
Grant Sides worked 2.1 scoreless innings out of the Captains bullpen. The right-hander struck out three and walked just one. The Silver Hawks snapped a season-worst three-game losing streak while the Captains' five-game winning streak came to a close.
The Silver Hawks are 8-3 in one-run games this season.
The Silver Hawks and Captains play the rubber match Friday at Coveleski Stadium. First pitch is slated for 7:35 p.m. EST. J.R. Bradley (2-3, 5.17) gets the start for South Bend and will be opposed by left-hander Elvis Araujo (0-4, 2.54) .
