Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING, Mich. - The Great Lakes Loons (12-12) rode productive showings from the top three hitters in their order to a 6-2 victory over the Lansing Lugnuts (11-13) on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Jackson® Field™.
A crowd of 2,144 attended, the final game with the 11,000 stadium capacity limited to 20%. The capacity returns to 100% on Tuesday, June 1st, as the Lugnuts welcome in the South Bend Cubs for the start of a six-game series through Sunday, June 6th.
The Loons scored two runs in both the first inning and the third inning against Lugnuts starter Stevie Emanuels, adding two insurance runs in the seventh off reliever Charles Hall. In each case, it was the same trio of batsmen behind the rally: leadoff hitter Miguel Vargas singled and doubled twice, scoring three runs; No. 2 hitter James Outman provided an RBI double and scored a run; and No. 3 hitter Andy Pages singled and scored, swatted a two-run homer and capped off the scoring with a sacrifice fly.
For their part, the Lugnuts collected eight hits, four walks and an HBP, but went 1-for-14 with runners in scoring position. The Nuts' only runs came in the first inning on a Jake Suddleson RBI groundout and in the sixth inning on a Lester Madden, Jr., RBI groundout.
In defeat, leadoff hitter Max Schuemann drew two walks and was hit by a pitch (for the league-leading eighth time) in five trips, stealing his 14th base of the year and scoring his 19th run of the year, each of which ranks second in the High-A Central. Schuemann has reached base in 18 consecutive games.
Catcher Drew Millas, for his part, singled, doubled and walk in five plate appearances and threw out two Loons attempting to steal; Millas has nabbed more runners on the bases (10) than any other catcher in the league.
The league takes a day off on Memorial Day before resuming action on Tuesday.
