Great Lakes Loons News Release
MIDLAND, MI - Josh Walter pitched a career-high seven innings, allowing only two runs on four hits, and the Great Lakes Loons offense did just enough for a 3-2 win over the Lansing Lugnuts in front of a more-than-capacity crowd of 5,717 at Dow Diamond on Tuesday night.
Kyle Russell hit his first homer of the second half of the season, a solo shot to right-center in the bottom of the third inning, and Dee Gordon delivered the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning to erase a 2-1 Lugnuts lead.
The Loons jumped on top in their half of the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead. Gordon walked and stole second, moved to third on a single by Jaime Pedroza and scored on a wild pitch by Lansing starter John Anderson.
Lansing went ahead in the top of the third inning thanks in large part to the speed of Tyler Pastornicky. The Lugnuts shortstop raced around the bases for an RBI triple to tie the game at 1-1. Then scored the go-ahead run on the back half of a double steal with Brian Van Kirk.
Russell's tying home run came with two outs in the bottom half of the frame, and was his 18th of the season. He is now one home run shy of matching the franchise career record of 19 homers held by Eduardo Perez (2007-08).
Gordon extended his hitting streak to 16 games with his RBI single in the fourth. That string is the second-longest in Loons history, trailing only a 19-game hitting stretch by the aforementioned Perez.
Walter improved to 5-1 on the year (2-0 as a starter) and Geison Aguasviva earned his first save with two scoreless innings of relief to close the ballgame. Anderson (2-5) took the loss for Lansing, allowing all three Loons runs in 3.2 innings of work.
The four-game intrastate series continues at Dow Diamond on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. Loons right-hander Bobby Blevins starts against Lugnuts right-hander Joel Carreno in his Midwest League debut. It will be Jurassic Ballpark Night, with a dinosaur theme dominating the evening, including an appearance by Paleo Joe. Tickets are available by calling 989-837-BALL or by logging on to Loons.com.
The Great Lakes Loons are the third-year Single-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers and members of the Midwest League. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
