South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, IN - In conjunction with the Arizona Diamondbacks, the South Bend Silver Hawks have announced that first round pick and former Notre Dame star A.J. Pollock has joined the club and is in tonight's starting lineup. In addition, infielder Ramon Ramirez was promoted to high-A Visalia during yesterday's off day.
Pollock was drafted in the First Round of the June draft earlier this month as the 17th overall selection by the Arizona Diamondbacks. He played collegiately at the University of Notre Dame, just minutes away from Coveleski Stadium. Pollock twice played against the Silver Hawks in the annual Silver versus Gold game in early April.
Pollock's selection equaled the highest an Irish player has ever been drafted, tying Ken Plesha in 1965 and Philadelphia Phillies closer Brad Lidge in 1998 (both were also selected 17th overall). His draft status rose after being named the MVP of the Cape Cod League in 2008, leading the summer wood bat league in hits, doubles, and slugging percentage while ranking second in batting average.
This season at Notre Dame, Pollock hit .365 with 69 runs scored, 10 homers, and 52 RBI. He became the first Irish player to ever hit 10 home runs and steal 20 bases in the same season and was named all-Big East first team for the second consecutive season.
Ramirez was signed as a non-drafted free agent in 2004, and was the only returning player from last year's Eastern Division championship team on the 2009 roster. He was batting .211 with one home run and 17 RBI at the time of his promotion.
The South Bend roster currently stands at 24 active players plus one on the disabled list. The Midwest League limit is 25 active players.
