South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, IN - A tough month ended on a high note Tuesday as the South Bend Silver Hawks defeated the West Michigan Whitecaps 4-1 at Coveleski Stadium. Despite going just 4-21 in June, the Hawks ended the month on a high note and built some momentum for July.
Brett Moorhouse (WP, 3-8) picked up his third victory of the season and first since May 22nd at Burlington. Moorhouse pitched 7.0 strong innings, allowing only one run while striking out four and walking three.
The Silver Hawks broke open a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the fifth by posting two runs against West Michigan starter Brandon Hamilton (LP, 3-3). Victor Estevez reached first on an infield single and was driven home by Reynaldo Navarro's fourth triple of the season. Alfredo Marte then doubled to drive in Navarro while collecting his team-high 37th RBI of the season to push South Bend in front 3-1.
South Bend added a run in the seventh against Victor Larez (ND). Nelson Gomez doubled, went to third on a sacrifice by Estevez, and scored on a wild pitch for the 4-1 lead.
South Bend started the scoring in the bottom of the second. Justin Parker drew a one-out walk and advanced to third on a single to left by catcher Rossmel Perez. After Alberto Diaz lined out, Gomez came through with a single to score Parker, good for his 22nd RBI of the year.
West Michigan tied the game up in the top of the fourth with a two-out rally. Jordan Lennerton singled and advanced to second with Bryan Pounds' walk. Joe Bowen then pulled a single into right field to drive home Lennerton. That would be the only run scored against Moorhouse on Tuesday night.
Justin Mace (ND) tossed a scoreless eighth, while T.J. Hose (SV, 8) struck out two in the ninth for the save.
Former Notre Dame star A.J. Pollock made his professional debut, going 0-for-4 in his first game for South Bend.
The four game series continues Wednesday at 7:30 PM Eastern Time at Coveleski Stadium. RHP Randy Rodriguez (1-5, 4.40 ERA) will start for South Bend while the Whitecaps go with RHP Brayan Villarreal (1-0, 0.74 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 7:10 PM on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
