Kane County Cougars News Release

GENEVA, Ill. - The Kane County Cougars used ninth-inning dramatics Tuesday night at Elfstrom Stadium to beat the Peoria Chiefs, 4-3. They fell behind early, took the lead late, lost the lead and then scored in the bottom of the ninth to win in front of 5,206 fans. Dusty Coleman's bouncer up the middle hit off Peoria shortstop Ryan Flaherty's glove and caromed to center field to bring home David Thomas for the game-deciding run.

Cougars starter Kenny Smalley pitched six innings of one-run ball and scattered five hits, walked two and fanned five. He gave up a first-inning run and later left trailing, 1-0, but ended up with a no-decision.

The Cougars rallied to take the lead in the seventh inning against reliever Kevin Kreier. Carlos Arrieche delivered a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to tie it, and Dusty Napoleon and Thomas hit back-to-back two-out RBI singles for a 3-1 lead. After Jamie Richmond posted a scoreless eighth, Justin Murray (2-0) got touched for two runs in the ninth, forcing the Cougars' offense to win it in the bottom half against Manolin DeLeon (3-2). Thomas smacked a one-out double and then scored without a play following Flaherty's error.

The Cougars (3-2, 44-31) and Chiefs (1-4, 39-35) continue the series Tuesday afternoon at 12 CDT. Pedro Figueroa (8-2, 3.39) will face Justin Bristow (3-3, 4.47).
