Birmingham Barons News Release

BIRMINGHAM, AL – Chattanooga and Birmingham locked horns in a mighty pitching duel but the Lookouts' John Koronka (6-5) got the best of the Barons' Kris McWhirter (0-2) as they took the opener of a four-game series 2-1 on Friday evening in front of 6,363 fans.

McWhirter held the Lookouts hitless through four innings before they were able to break through for two runs in the fifth. Keith Mitchell singled to lead off the inning and later moved to third on a double by Brian Peterson. With runners on second and third and two outs, Wilmy Caceres doubled to right center to plate both Mitchell and Peterson to take the 2-0 lead.

The Barons cut the lead in half with a run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Gabe Alvarez that plated Chad Durham but were unable to capitalize on several opportunities to tie or take the lead throughout the game.

Koronka threw eight innings and gave up just one run on seven hits with seven strikeouts to pick up the win and David Gil picked up his ninth save of the season despite giving up two hits in the ninth. McWhirter took the tough loss after tossing six strong innings giving up just two runs on three hits with six punchouts.

Tomorrow night the Barons look to even the series as they send out RHP Enemencio Pacheco (5-2, 2.60) to face RHP Josh Hall (3-6, 3.01). Game time is 7:00 PM and all the action can be heard on 101.1 FM "The Source" with Curt Bloom on the play-by-play.
