Orlando Rays News Release
Mobile, Ala. â Dan Grummitt hit two home runs and Orlando starter Jon Switzer won his second straight start as the visiting Rays dropped the Mobile BayBears 5-1 at Hank Aaron Stadium.
Grummitt had been struggling mightily in June, hitting only .162 (6-37) with no homers and only one RBI coming into Saturday's action. His two homers were his first since May 27 vs. Jacksonville, and his 2 hits on the night gave him his first multi-hit game since 6/1 vs. Chattanooga.
Grummitt also drove in all 5 runs Saturday, setting the 2003 single-game high for the O-Rays. Juan Salas went 1-3 with one run scored to extend his hitting streak to 10 games.
Prior to picking up the win Monday against the Jacksonville Suns, Switzer had dropped three straight decisions and had a winless streak dating back to May 7. The 23-year-old lefty improved to 5-6 as he limited the BayBears to three hits over 7.0 innings, with the only run allowed coming by way of a solo home run to Jon Benick in the 4th inning.
John Benedetti, John Rocker and Evan Rust combined on two innings of hitless and scoreless relief, striking out three over the final two frames.
The Rays and BayBears square off again tomorrow at 8:05 ET, with RHP Jim Magrane (6-3, 4.14) going for Orlando while Mobile counters with RHP Steve Watkins (4-4, 4.79). The Rays return to Orlando Wednesday for a four game series with the Birmingham Barons at Cracker Jack Stadium.
