Orlando Rays News Release

Mobile, Ala. — Jose Veras tossed six strong innings and Orlando got an unexpected power boost from Jace Brewer as the Rays opened their four game series with Mobile by dropping the BayBears 7-2 at Hank Aaron Stadium.

Brewer hit his second home run of the season and drove in two runs to pace the Rays offense, while Veras held the Mobile offense to two runs – both earned – on three hits over 6.0 innings of work. The big right-hander also struck out six and improved his record to 3-6 on the year after winning for the third time in his last four decisions.

Frank Moore, Danny Massiatte and Brooks Badeaux all had two hits for Orlando, who improved to 30-36 on the season and won just its 10th road game of the year. Badeaux, optioned from Class AAA Durham earlier in the day to help the short-handed Rays, also stole a base and drove in two runs.

Bartolome Fortunato and Evan Rust combined on three innings of scoreless relief, allowing one hit and striking out four over the final three frames.

The Rays and BayBears square off again tomorrow at 8:05 ET, with LHP Jon Switzer (4-6, 4.38) taking the hill for the Rays while Mobile counters with RHP Roger Deago (4-3, 4.07).
