BayBears fall in series opener

Mobile BayBears News Release

Mobile, Ala. – The Mobile BayBears opened their final series of the Southern League's first half Friday night and were stymied at the plate by outstanding Orlando pitching. The BayBears fell in the opener, 7-2, in front of 5,267 fans at Hank Aaron Stadium.

Jose Veras (3-6) was wild but effective for the Rays Friday night, walking four, but allowed just two runs on three Mobile hits. BayBears starter, Duncan McAdoo took the loss, though he was solid. McAdoo (2-3) gave up only three runs while striking out seven in six innings of work.

The BayBears scored single runs in the first and third innings. Todd Donovan led off the game for Mobile with a double and scored on Rico Washington's sacrifice fly. With the score tied 1-1, Jake Gautreau hit a solo homerun with one out, but that would be it offensively for the BayBears on the night.

The Rays' Jace Brewer hit a two-run homerun in the top of the fifth to give Orlando a 3-2 lead. They would add two runs in the seventh and two more in the ninth to go on to the 7-2 win.

Game two of the four-game set will be Saturday night at 7:05. Roger Deago (4-3; 4.07) will get the start for Mobile against Orlando's Jon Switzer (4-6; 4.38). The first 1,000 fans through the gates at Hank Aaron Stadium will receive a free American flag. Also, as the BayBears will be celebrating Father's Day all weekend at Hank Aaron Stadium, all children are invited to play catch with their dads on the field from 6-6:30 Saturday and Sunday evenings.
