Birmingham Barons News Release

BIRMINGHAM, AL – Neal Cotts was the hard-luck loser as he threw 7.0 outstanding innings but gave up two runs in the eighth as the Birmingham Barons lost to the Chattanooga Lookouts 2-1 in front of 4,912 fans on Wednesday afternoon at the Hoover Met. With the win the Lookouts now have a 2-0 lead in the four-game series and own a 5-1 record versus the Barons at the Met.

Cotts (8-5) allowed a single up the middle to the second batter of the game, Andrew Beattie, but erased him on a double play on the next batter Dernell Stenson. He then retired the next 18 consecutive batters and took a 1-0 lead into the eighth inning.

In the eighth, Cotts surrendered a leadoff double to Jim Chamblee followed by a RBI single by Guye Senjem before being lifted for reliever Scott Dunn. After Senjem was sacrificed to second, Dunn gave up a single to Alejandro Diaz to allow the go ahead run to score

The Barons got on the board with a run in the fourth inning to take an early 1-0 lead against Chattanooga starter Josh Hall (6-7). With two outs, Jeremy Reed reached on a error and advanced to third on a single by Gabe Alvarez before trotting home on an RBI single by Scott Bikowski. The run would prove to be the only one the Barons could muster all day as Hall and a trio of relievers shut them down the rest of the way. Kris Keller picked up his third save of the season after tossing a scoreless ninth.

Tomorrow, game three will feature RHP Enemencio Pacheco (7-2, 2.56) for the Barons versus RHP Bobby Basham (5-9, 5.32) for Chattanooga. All the action can be heard on 101.1 FM "The Source" with Curt Bloom on the play-by-play.
