Lookouts Soak Barons, 7-3

July 23, 2003 - Southern League (SL1)
Birmingham Barons News Release

BIRMINGHAM, AL – The Birmingham Barons and Chattanooga Lookouts were delayed half an hour at the beginning of the game and waited through another hour long delay in the eighth as the Lookouts took game one of the series 7-3 in front of 4,352 fans on a soggy Tuesday evening.

After the start of the game was delayed for half an hour, Tetsu Yofu (7-6) picked up the loss after tossing 5.1 innings and giving up five runs on eight hits including a solo homer to the first batter of the game, Santiago Perez, on the first pitch of the game.

The start was a sign of things to come for the Barons as Chattanooga took a 4-0 lead by the fifth inning and never looked back. Perez went 3-for-3 on the night with a homer, a triple, two RBI and two runs scored and Dernell Stenson knocked out four hits and scored twice for the Lookouts.

Lookouts starter, Steven Kelly (1-0), made his Double-A debut and picked up the win after throwing six solid innings giving up just one run on six hits and striking out five. He was a little wild as he walked four batters but the Barons helped him out by hitting into four double plays and leaving ten runners on base.

Birmingham plated a run in the fifth on an RBI single by Jeremy Reed to make the score 4-1 and made things fairly interesting in the eighth when Jon Hamilton drove in two runs on a single to center to cut the lead to 6-3. At that point the sky opened up and delayed the game for an hour and killed any momentum the Barons had.

Tomorrow, game two is an 11:00 AM afternoon game that will feature LHP Neal Cotts (8-4, 2.28) for the Barons versus RHP Josh Hall (5-7, 3.04) for Chattanooga. All the action can be heard on 1260 AM with Curt Bloom on the play-by-play.
