
Lookouts send five to All-Star Game

The Chattanooga Lookouts have five players heading the 2006 Southern League All-Star Game. First baseman Joey Votto, third baseman Aaron Herr, outfielder Noochie Varner, relief pitcher Jon Coutlangus, and closer David Shafer have all earned a spot for the North Division All-Stars. Former Lookouts' pitcher Steve Kelly earned a selection, however, he has been since promoted to AAA Louisville.
Joey Votto is currently leading the league in home runs (15), second in RBI (48), first in hits (94), third in average (.318), first in doubles (25), first in slugging percentage (.568), first in (42), and first in runs scored (50). Third baseman Aaron Herr is ranked in the top 10 in average (.308) and he has also hit nine home runs and has driven in 40 RBI. Noochie Varner is ranked right behind Herr in average with a .302 mark. He is also ranked fourth in the league in RBI (44). RHP Jon Coutlangus has been stellar all season long out of the Lookouts' pen. In 32 appearances this season, Coutlangus has a 2.09 ERA with 36 strikeouts in 38.1 innings. He has held the opposition to a cool .176 average. Chattanooga closer David Shafer has been lights out in the ninth all season. He is leading the league in saves with 22 and a 1.11 ERA with 28 strikeouts in 26.1 innings. Before being promoted to Louisville, Steve Kelly was leading the league in wins with nine and had a 2.82 ERA in 14 starts this season.
The 2006 All-Star Game will be held at Riverwalk Stadium in Montgomery, AL on July 10th at 7:05. There will be a homerun derby before the game, featuring long-ball specialists from around the Southern League. Tickets are still available, for more information, log onto www.biscuitsbaseball.com.
