Chattanooga Lookouts News Release
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The Lookouts bullpen, which began the season on a rocky note, continued their recent string of successful efforts by throwing 5.2 innings of shutout ball against the Stars. The Lookouts offense, led by a five-hit effort by Jamie Hoffman, took care of business on the other side of the equation in a 7-2 win at AT&T Field on Tuesday night.
Huntsville began the scoring in the top of the second by plating two runs. Drew T. Anderson hit a single to begin the rally and scored on a J.R. Hopf double to right. John Raburn followed with an RBI single to give the Stars and early 2-0 lead.
Chattanooga quickly countered in the bottom portion of the second inning with two runs of their own. With one out, Lucas May nailed a single to left to set the table for the Lookouts. After a passed ball, Juan Gonzalez walked to put runners on first and second. Starting pitcher Francisco Felix then helped his own cause by hitting a soft, well-placed liner to right, scoring both runners.
The Lookouts went ahead in the third on a Gaby Martinez two-run shot to right. After using a more efficient means of scoring in the third, the Lookouts incorporated some good ole fashioned small ball in the fourth to plate another run. Juan Gonzalez began the inning with a walk and was pushed to second on a Jesus Rodriguez sacrifice bunt. James Tomlin followed with an infield singe, advancing Gonzalez to third. Victor Mercedes then hit a sacrifice fly to right, allowing Gonzalez to score on a close play at the plate.
The Lookouts kept rolling in the fifth with two more runs. Jamie Hoffman began the inning with a single and promptly stole second. Walks to Gaby Martinez and Josh Bell loaded the bases. After a Lucas May strikeout, Juan Gonzalez induced a run-resulting walk. Jesus Gonzalez struck out, but another James Tomlin infield single put the Lookouts lead at 7-2. Victor Mercedes would fly out to end the inning.
Brent Leach and Victor Garate sealed the deal for the Lookouts out of the bullpen and preserved the 7-2 victory.
David Welch dropped to 0-3 on the season for Huntsville. In four innings of work, he yielded five runs on seven hits and two walks. He recorded four strikeouts in the losing effort.
Jesus Rodriguez (1-1), who came in relief of Francisco Felix in the fourth inning, was credited with the win for the Lookouts. He threw 3.1 innings of shutout baseball, only surrendering three hits. He struck out one batter, while surrendering no walks.
