THIS DATE IN BASEBALL HISTORY:
1901 - The American League had its first shutout. The Washington Nationals beat the Boston Somersets, 4-0.
1912 - In New York, Ty Cobb attacked a fan. The fan, accused of heckling Cobb, was missing one hand and part of the other. Cobb attacked him anyway. During the next few days, the trouble escalated. Cobb was suspended, the Tigers voted to strike, and the team fielded what we believe to be the first replacement players. Each striking player was fined by the league. Cobb returned to the Tiger lineup on May 26.
1918 - Walter Johnson recorded the longest shutout victory in history. The Washington Senators beat the Chicago White Sox, 1-0, when Claude "Lefty" Williams, who also went the distance, gave up the winning run . . . on a wild pitch . . . in the 18th inning.
1941 - Joe DiMaggio of New York got a single against the Chicago White Sox. It was the first hit of his 56 game streak. After one hitless game following the streak, DiMaggio began another which gave him a hit in 72 out of 73 games. The White Sox beat the Yankees, 13-1.
1953 - This is the birthday of George Brett. Besides leading the Kansas City Royals to their only World Series title in 1985, Brett's statistics are overwhelming: 3,000 hits, 300 homers, 600 doubles, 100 triples, and 200 stolen bases. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1999.
1973 - Nolan Ryan struck out 12 en route to a no-hitter. This was the first of his record seven no-hit efforts. He pitched his second two months later. His catcher, Jeff Torborg, backstopped the third no-hitter of his career. The Angels beat Kansas City, 3-0. No other player has ever pitched more than four major league no-hitters.
