Chattanooga Lookouts News Release
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The Lookouts mounted another thrilling, late-inning comeback against the Mobile BayBears in a 5-4 matinee special at AT&T Field.
Mobile got off to an early start with their offensive attack by scoring two runs in the first inning. Guillermo Reyes began the game with an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error by Lookouts starting pitcher Ben Jukich. Gregory Thomson followed with a double to score Reyes. After a Jukich balk, which advanced Thomson to third, Rusty Ryal grounded out to shortstop, plating Thomson.
The Lookouts quickly countered in the bottom portion of the first by scoring two runs off of BayBears starting pitcher and Chattanooga native Adam Howard. Shaun Cumberland started the rally with a single and subsequent stolen base. After a Drew Anderson walk and Michael Griffin strike out, Tonys Gutierrez followed with an RBI single. Cody Strait duplicated Gutierrez's production and tied-up that score at 2-2.
Both teams' offenses remained latent until the bottom of the eighth, when the Lookouts scored three runs to take the lead with two outs.
Cody Strait began the pivotal rally with a double. After an Eric Eymann intentional walk, pinch hitter Craig Tatum came through in the clutch with a two-RBI double. Chris Denove would add an important RBI by hitting a single to left, driving home Tatum.
Pedro Viola came into the ninth in hopes of capturing his first save of the season. He would not do so without a struggle.
Cesar Nicolas singled off of Viola to begin the inning and scampered to second on a Tatum passed ball. Brandon Burgess followed with a single to center, which centerfielder Shaun Cumberland misplayed, allowing Nicolas to score and Burgess to advance to second. After a Cyle Hankerd pop out, Orlando Mercado singled to center, scoring Burgess. Viola, however, would settle down and retire the next two batters to end the game.
Danny Herrera pitched a perfect eighth to improve to 3-0 on the season.
Forrest Cory dropped to 2-1 after relinquishing three runs in the eighth frame.
Carolina will come into town to play the Lookouts at AT&T Field to begin a five-game series, tomorrow at 7:15. Tickets for this games or any other Lookouts home game can be purchased at the Lookouts Box Office at AT&T Field, online at www.lookouts.com, or by calling (423) 267-4849.
