Narron Flirts With Perfection in Stars Victory

Sam Narron retired the first 23 batters he faced en route to a complete-game two-hitter in Huntsville's 9-1 victory over Mississippi Wednesday morning and afternoon in the last of a five-game set at Trustmark Park. The Stars improved to 12-8 on the season after taking three of five in the series, while the Braves' second two-game win streak came to an end, as they fell to 4-16. Huntsville has outscored the Braves 65-29 in grabbing eight of the ten meetings this season.

Narron breezed through seven innings, recording 11 ground ball outs and retiring nine hitters with two pitches or less. He struck out Kala Ka'aihue to begin the eighth and then set down Greg Creek on a bouncing ball to first for the second out. Diory Hernandez bunted the first pitch he saw foul up the third base line and was greeted by an irritated catcher Carlos Corporan on his return to the batter's box. The Mississippi second sacker then smashed a ground ball past Mat Gamel at third, down the left field line and into the corner for a triple to ruin Narron's bid for perfection. Narron walked Mark Jurich before retiring JC Boscan on a liner to center field to end the frame.

Matt Young walked with one out in the ninth, moved to third base on a double by Javier Guzman and scored on a Jason Perry sacrifice fly to spoil the shutout bid. Narron walked two, fanned five and chipped in with two hits in his second nine inning complete game with the Stars to improve to 3-1.

The visitors jumped on Dustin Evans for four runs in the first inning on five hits. Mat Gamel, Matt LaPorta and Chris Errecart delivered consecutive run-scoring doubles to make it 3-0. Freddy Parejo singled with two outs to score Errecart to complete the rally. The Stars scored seven times in the first inning off of Evans in his two starts against them. Parejo finished with three hits and is has collected 20 hits in 41 at-bats.

Ryan Crew doubled with one out in the fourth and scored when Narron followed with a double down the left field line to collect his first hit and first run batted in of the season. Michael Brantley doubled home two runs with two outs in the sixth and then scored when Alcides Escobar followed with a single to make it 8-0 and chase Evans from the game. The right-hander suffered his fourth loss in as many turns after allowing 10 hits, walking two and fanning three.

The Stars return home Thursday night to begin a five-game set against Jacksonville with southpaw Steve Hammond making the start against Suns' right-hander James McDonald.
