Can-Am Brockton Rox

Long Name, Short Game: Wlodarczyk Mows Down Skyhawks

Brockton Rox News Release

Brockton, Mass. - Rox starter Mike Wlodarczyk was masterful, twirling a five-hit shutout as Brockton defeated Sussex, 2-0, in a Can-Am League affair at Campanelli Stadium on Sunday evening. The two teams zipped through the game in one hour, fifty-one minutes, just three minutes short of the league record for quickest nine-inning contest.

The Rox offense was carried on the evening by red-hot 1B Melvin Falu, who kicked things off with a first-inning RBI single, bringing home CF Chris Valencia. One night after tying the Brockton (6-7 second half, 33-27 overall) team mark for career home runs, Falu then blasted a seventh-inning solo shot into the left-field bullpens to break Jake Daubert's mark of 33 dingers. It was also Falu's league-leading 14th homer of the 2010 campaign.

It was all the support that Wlodarczyk (7-3) needed, as the lefthander fanned four, tying him for the Can-Am lead with 78 K's on the season. It was just the second nine-inning complete-game shutout in the circuit this season, as New Jersey's Isaac Pavlik shut down the Skyhawks (3-9, 28-30), 2-0, on July 22.

Jeff Icenogle (4-4) was the hard-luck losing pitcher on the evening; the Sussex hurler also threw a complete game, giving up just three hits and striking out seven. SS Chase Fontaine was the only Skyhawk with more than one hit, going 2-for-4.

The two teams will meet for the fourth and final game of the series on Monday night at 6:05 p.m. at Campanelli Stadium, as Brockton's Freddy Flores (5-2) faces Sussex's Dan Berlind (2-3) on Kids Eat Free Monday and National Night Out Against Crime at the park.
