Can-Am League Recap

August 1, 2010 - Canadian American League (Can-Am) News Release

Brockton 2, Sussex 0

In an impressive pitchers' duel, Brockton's Mike Wlodarczyk tossed a five-hit shutout and outlasted Sussex's Jeff Icenogle en route to a 2-0 win. Wlodarczyk walked just two and faced his only major threat in the top of the ninth on his way to his seventh win of the season. Icenogle was the tough-luck loser despite allowing only an RBI single in the first and a solo homer in the seventh, both by Brockton 1B Melvin Falu. Outside of Falu's two knocks, the Rox managed just one more hit off of Icenogle, who at one point retired 12 straight batters.

Quebec 4, Worcester 3

The Capitales managed a go-ahead rally in the top of the fifth, and relied on a strong start from Michel Simard to down Worcester 4-3. With the game tied at one, Quebec got RBI singles from RF Anthony Cros and 3B Michael Thompson and a sacrifice fly by DH Pete LaForest to jump into the lead. Simard allowed single Worcester runs in the fifth and seventh innings to narrow the lead to one run, but two relievers didn't allow a hit in the final 2.2 innings to close out the Tornadoes. Simard picked up his fifth win, surrendering 10 hits and three earned runs, but striking out eight, and Andrew Albers got a two-inning save.

Pittsfield 9, New Jersey 7

Pittsfield used a steady offensive attack and excellent pitching out of the bullpen to beat New Jersey 9-7 in a see-saw affair. The Colonials took the lead early with a four-run second, but couldn't hold the lead and trailed by one heading into the sixth. But SS Matt Nandin put Pittsfield into the lead for good with a three-run go-ahead homer, his sixth round tripper of the season. Nandin and RF Jerod Edmondson at the top of the lineup did most of the damage for Pittsfield, combining for three hits, three runs, and five RBI. And after Nandin's shot put Pittsfield in the lead, four relievers allowed just one run over the final 4.1 innings to hang on to the advantage. In the loss, New Jersey outhit the Colonials 14-8, including three hits from CF Adam Goodwin and 3B Abraham Nunez.
