
Long Island sweeps doubleheader and series from Bears

(Central Islip, N.Y., Aug. 31, 2006) - The Long Island Ducks completed the series sweep over the Newark Bears with a pair of shutouts in Thursday's doubleheader. In the three-game series, Long Island kept Newark off the board through all 23 innings of play while outscoring the Bears 20-0.
In game one, the Duck's offense fired on all cylinders in a 14-0 victory over the Bears. In the contest, the club registered 14 hits with Kevin Haverbusch leading the way. The Massapequa native registered a pair of doubles and a three-run home run while scoring four times. Henry Rodriguez added a pair of hits while crossing the plate four times. Southpaw Pete Hartmann (8-5) allowed just two singles in his six innings of work to pick up the win.
In the second game of the twin bill, David Manning (1-0) was masterful in his Ducks debut. The righty yielded just a hit and a walk while fanning six over six scoreless frames to guide the Ducks to a 5-0 victory. Erick Almonte gave Long Island the lead for good with an RBI single in the bottom of the third. The former Yankee wrapped up the club's scoring with a two-run homer to left field in the fifth inning.
On Friday, the Ducks will welcome the Somerset Patriots to Citibank Park to open up a three-game weekend series at 7:05 p.m. Kevin Mannix (0-0) will take the hill against the Pats Jeff Urban (2-1). The first 1,500 fans through the turnstiles will receive cooler bags courtesy of Cardinal Logistics. Chris King will call all the action live from Central Islip starting at 6:50 p.m. on WLIE (540 AM) Radio.
