Bears don't answer Duck calls

Newark Bears News Release
August 31, 2006 - The Newark Bears finished up the month of August just missing out on win number eleven for the month. They couldn't take advantage of two separate chances tonight, losing both ends of a doubleheader to the Long Island Ducks, 14-0 and 5-0. The losses put the Bears at a record of 18-25 in the second half and ensure that the Bears will be at least eight games behind the first place Bridgeport Bluefish come tomorrow morning.
The Bears were limited to just three hits in game one tonight. Ducks starter Pete Hartmann (8-5) gave up just two hits over six innings, walking one and striking out five. Leadoff man Matt Brunson, right fielder Al Benjamin, and first baseman Alexis Hernandez each singled. The Ducks were paced by left fielder Kevin Haverbusch in game one. Haverbusch doubled twice and hit a three-run homer in the third off of Bears starter Pat Daneker. Daneker (4-8) pitched three complete innings, giving up six runs on eight hits.
In game two, the Bears were stumped by Ducks starter David Manning. Manning (1-0), making his first start in the Atlantic League this season, allowed only a two-out double to shortstop Jack Santora in the bottom of the third. Santora walked in the sixth against Manning and reached third base on a ground out and a passed ball, but Anthony Sanders struck out to end the inning. Ducks third baseman Erick Almonte led the charge for the home team with a two-run home run and an RBI single. David Shepard (5-13) suffered the loss. He allowed all five runs, four earned, on seven hits and a walk in five innings.
An eleventh win this month would have given the Bears the most wins in a month this season. They went 10-19 in June and improved to 10-12 in July. They secured their tenth win of August last Friday when they took game one of their four game series with the Camden Riversharks, but have lost six straight since. The offense has struggled, scoring just six runs in the last five contests.
The Bears head out to Lancaster for a three-game series starting tomorrow night. Knuckleballer Joe Gannon (6-8) will take the hill for the Bears.
