Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC (AUGUST 3, 2010) - Seth Loman went 3 for 4 with a home run, two doubles, and four RBI to help Winston-Salem power past Wilmington 8-5 on Tuesday night at BB&T Ballpark. The Dash has taken the first two games of the series and will go for the sweep on Wednesday night.
The Blue Rocks (20-18, 52-56) struck first against Joe Serafin, notching a pair of runs in the first inning. After Christian Colon reached on an error, High Point native Wil Myers doubled to put both men in scoring position. Ernesto Mejia and Nick Francis followed with consecutive RBI singles to give Wilmington a 2-0 lead.
Winton-Salem (19-18, 62-45) did not stay off the scoreboard for long, as Brandon Short hit a solo home run off Aaron Crow in the bottom of the first to slice the Rocks' lead in half. The homer was Short's 15th of the season, ranking him fourth in the Carolina League.
The visitors re-established their two-run cushion in the third, when Francis hit an RBI triple off Short's glove in centerfield. Short slammed into the padding on the outfield wall and was slow to get to his feet, earning a visit from the trainer. He stayed in the game for the rest of the inning, but left the game at the start of the fourth.
Down a pair, the Dash started a rally in the bottom of the third. Short led off the inning by reaching on an error and moved to third on a base hit by Jon Gilmore. Loman collected his first RBI of the night by doubling Short home to cut Wilmington's lead to 3-2. After Josh Phegley struck out with men on second and third, Crow (0-1) started to self-destruct on the mound. His first pitch to Ozzie Lewis went to the backstop, scoring Gilmore from third. Lewis walked and then Crow threw another wild pitch to bring home Loman and give the Dash a 4-3 lead.
The Blue Rocks tied the game in the next half-inning when Rey Navarro tripled and scored on a double by Adam Frost.
Loman put the Dash into the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth inning. He blasted a solo home run off Crow to left-center field to give Winston a 5-4 advantage. It was Loman's 18th homer of the season, tying Potomac's Tyler Moore for the league lead. It was also his second home run in as many nights.
Winston-Salem added another run in the sixth on an RBI single by Kenny Williams, Jr. Wilmington cut it to a 6-5 game when Mejia brought in Christian Colon on an RBI groundout.
The Dash got some needed breathing room in the bottom of the seventh. Drew Garcia and Gilmore led off the inning with a single and walk, setting the stage for another big Loman at bat. Rather than bring in a lefty to face the left-handed batter, Brian Rupp kept Crow in the game. Loman made Rupp pay for his decision by socking a two-run double to left-center field. He was thrown out at third base trying to stretch the hit to a triple, but the damage was done; two more runs scored to give Winston an 8-5 lead.
Garrett Johnson and Tyson Corley pitched two scoreless innings to close out the win for the Dash. Corley worked a perfect ninth for his fifth save. Serafin (1-2) got his first Carolina League win, allowing four runs (three earned) on nine hits in six innings. Crow was dealt the loss. In 6.2 innings, he surrendered eight runs (six earned) on ten hits.
Loman now has a five-game hit streak, over which he is batting .450 with three home runs and nine RBI. Gilmore also has a five-gamer and is hitting .400 in his streak.
Winston-Salem has won its first home series against Wilmington this season. The Dash has previously lost a three-game series and split a four-game set against the Blue Rocks at BB&T Ballpark.
Winston has a chance for its first sweep of Wilmington, home or road, when the series concludes on Wednesday night. RHP Terry Doyle (5-7, 3.39) goes for the Dash against LHP Will Smith (0-1, 1.29). First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. with the audio broadcast starting at 6:45 on www.wsdash.com .
