THE HILLCATS: Last night Lynchburg fell 6-4 in 11 innings to Potomac at City Stadium...After winning four games in a row, the Hillcats have lost four straight...Tonight they play the middle game of a three-game series with the Nationals...The Cats are playing the only three home games they have in a stretch of 13 out of 16 on the road...
VS. POTOMAC: The Hillcats are 6-8 against the Nationals thus far this season and are 4-4 at City Stadium...Lynchburg is 160-153 against Potomac all-time...Last season the Cats won the season series with the P-Nats 11-9...
NOT SO FLY JULY: In the month of July the Hillcats posted a 9-18 mark...Their .333 winning percentage is the worst month of the season for Lynchburg...The nine wins ties April for the least amount of victories in a month and in April the Cats only played 21 games...The team had a .269 batting average with a 4.60 team ERA...
SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY: Last night Lynchburg pitchers issued 11 walks to Potomac batters...Two of those 11 base runners came around to score in the contest...Two of the 11 base on balls were intentional...
ISSUES IN EXTRAS: With their loss in 11 innings last night the Hillcats dropped to 3-6 in extra innings this season and they are now 0-3 when playing free baseball against Potomac this year...After Lynchburg did not go to extras in their first 31 games of the second half of the season, they have twice now in their last four games and dropped both contests...The Cats have now lost four straight games in extra innings...
LATE NIGHT WITH THE CATS: The series opener last night lasted three hours and 46 minutes...The 11 inning contest was the second longest game of the season, only behind a 14 inning affair against Frederick on May 29th at City Stadium...That contest was part of a doubleheader, and the first game of the twin bill lasted two hours and 32 minutes...
IN THEIR HANDS: The Hillcats bullpen allowed five runs last night in six innings of action and took a blown save and a loss...It marked the third time in four games the pen has been hit with a blown save and a loss..Last Thursday in Salem the Lynchburg bullpen could not hold a three-run advantage heading into the seventh inning (at one point the Hillcats led by five in that game)...On Wednesday in Frederick the Cats had a two-run lead going into the bottom of the tenth inning, but the relief core could not shut the door...Over the last four games the Hillcats bullpen in 0-3 with a 6.75 ERA (12 earned runs in 16 innings) and three blown saves...The Cats have now blown 33 leads this season, while they have have come from behind to win 14 games...
PHAT WITH THE BAT: OF Denis Phipps went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI, two runs scored, a walk and a steal last night...In 17 games with the Hillcats the outfielder is batting .403 (25-for-62) with eight doubles, a triple, five home runs, 15 RBI, 17 runs scored, nine walks and seven steals...His current OPS is 1.285...Five of his last eight games have been multi-hit performances and he has eight multi-hit games since coming to the Hillcats...In 82 games with Double-A Carolina he had only homered twice and his OPS was .652...
ALL GOOD THINGS MUST END: RHP Jeff Jeffords had his streak of 11 and 1/3 scoreless innings end last night when he gave up three runs in 2/3 of an inning last night to take the blown save...It was the first time since June 30th that the righty had given up a run, as in seven July appearances he did not allow a run...Two outings ago RHP Justin Freeman had his consecutive scoreless innings streak snapped at 16 and 1/3 innings, the longest scoreless stretch by a Hillcats hurler this season...LHP Andrew Bowman had thrown ten straight scoreless innings before he gave up a run two appearances ago in Frederick...Also, earlier in the season RHP Nick Christiani had a stretch of 15 and 1/3 straight innings in which he did not give up a run...
STREAK BUSTER: OF Kyle Day went 0-for-3 with a walk last night to bring his 15-game hit streak to a close...His season-high streak was the longest streak by a Hillcat this season (OF Josh Fellhauer, INF Alex Buchholz and OF Denis Phipps all hit in 11 straight)...In those 15 games he batted .397 (23-for-58)...Over a longer stretch he had hit in 22 of his last 24 games and over that time he was 35-for-88 (.398) with five doubles, a triple, two home runs (including a grand slam), 17 RBI, 13 runs scored, eight walks and three steals...In those 25 contests Day had raised his average from .226 to .285...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: RHP Patrick Lehman was selected by Washington in the 13th round of the 2009 draft out of George Washington University...His final year with the Colonials he went 7-4 with a 2.40 ERA in 13 starts his junior season...He made his professional debut last season with Short Season Low-A Vermont and had a 3-1 mark with a 1.65 ERA in seven games (three starts)...He finished the year with full season Low-A Hagerstown where he had a 1-1 record with a 2.25 ERA in six starts for the Suns...This season with Potomac he has gone 3-2 with a 4.79 ERA in 13 games (11 starts)...He was placed on the Disabled List on June 10th and before returning to the P-Nats, he made four appearances (one start) with the GCL Nationals and went 1-0 with a 1.80 ERA...In his lone start since returning to Potomac the righty gave up two runs in five innings in taking a no-decision at Wilmington last Wednesday...Lehman has made one start against Lynchburg this season and he gave up two runs in five innings in taking a no-decision at City Stadium on May 2nd...
