Logue Leads Jays to 4-1 Win over St. Lucie
August 18, 2018 - Florida State League (FSL1)
Dunedin Blue Jays News Release
The Blue Jays five-game losing streak is over thanks to a strong outing from LHP Zach Logue and the Blue Jays bullpen. Coming off a career-high 10 strikeouts in his last outing, Logue recorded six straight K's in the second and third inning on his way to his eighth win of the season with Dunedin and his 11th overall.
Facing a Mets lineup bolstered by rehabbing stars David Wright and Jay Bruce, Logue was at his best from the beginning. The lefty set the side down in order in the top of the first, including inducing flyouts from both Major Leaguers. He ran into trouble in the second, allowing a run to score on three consecutive singles and a walk to open the inning. Facing a bases loaded, nobody out jam with one run already in, Logue proceeded to strike out the next three batters to end the inning and the threat.
The one run is all St. Lucie woud get. After finishing the second with three straight strikeouts, Logue struck out the side in the third. He allowed a hit in each of the next three innings, but kept the Mets off the scoreboard each time, finishing his evening with 6.0 innings pitched, six hits and one run allowed, and seven strikeouts.
The Dunedin offense tied the game up in the fifth inning. CF Joshua Palacios opened the inning with a single. After a fly out for the first out, SS Kevin Smith stepped to the plate and lined a double up the left field line to bring home Palacios and even the score at 1-1.
The Blue Jays sticks struck again in the sixth. DH Logan Warmoth led off the inning with a single, followed quickly by a walk worked by 1B Kacy Clemens. LF Rodrigo Orozco knocked a single to center, scoring Warmoth and putting runners on first and third. An infield single by 3B Yeltsin Gudino brought home Palacios and a fielding error by St. Lucie allowed Orozco to come around and score to put Dunedin up 4-1.
With the lead, the Blue Jays turned the ball over to the bullpen. RHP Jonny Cheshire allowed a single in the seventh, but induced a ground out to record a scoreless inning. LHP Angel Perdomo entered and struck out the side in the eighth before returning to the mound in the ninth to finish off his first save of the season.
Warmoth had three hits, including a double, and a run scored for Dunedin. Palacios and Smith each had two hits.
With the win, Logue's record improves to 8-3 with Dunedin and 11-4 overall in 2018. Joe Cavallaro (2-3) took the loss for St. Lucie, allowing four runs on nine hits over 5.0 innings.
Dunedin's overall record pulls even at 62-62 on the season and improves to 31-25 in the second half. They remain 5.5 games out of first in the North Division. The Blue Jays and Mets will finish their three-game series at Dunedin Stadium tomorrow afternoon starting at 1:00 PM.
