LAST NIGHT: The Tarpons celebrated their fourth walk-off win of the season when Diego Castillo delivered a game-winning RBI single in the 10th for a 3-2 win over the Tortugas...RHP Albert Abreu pitched into the 6th (5.1IP, 4H, 2ER, 1BB, 5K, 71P/49S) in his second start back off the disabled list...Estevan Florial (1-for-2, HR, 2BB, 2RBI, R) hit a go-ahead, two-out, two-run homer in the 3rd...RHP Kaleb Ort retired eight of nine batters faced (2.2IP, 1H, 5K) in relief of Abreu...RHP Greg Weissert (W, 2-2) tossed a perfect 9th and stranded runners on the corners in a scoreless 10th (2.0IP, IBB, 3K)...Angel Aguilar (1-for-4, 2R) scored the winning run on the two-out single by Castillo in the 10th.
LET'S GO STREAKING: Dom Thompson-Williams (1-for-4, 2B) extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a leadoff double in the 4th. Over that span, the 23-year-old is batting .365 (19-for-52) with 14 runs scored. In August (16 games), Thompson-Williams is batting .339 (20-for-59) with 4HR, 13RBI and 10BB.
RUTA'S RAKING: Over his last 28 games, Ben Ruta is batting .362 (38-for-105) with 22RBI and 14 runs scored. Ruta also leads all Yankees minor-leaguers with 36 stolen bases.
VS. DAYTONA: Tonight will be the eighth of 12 games scheduled between the Tampa Tarpons and Daytona Tortugas. Daytona leads the season-series, 4-3. Tampa is 2-2 in those games played at GMS Field. In seven games against the Tortugas, Angel Aguilar is batting .320 (8-for-25) with 3R, 1 double, 1 triple, 1HR, 2RBI and 1BB.
1,000 K CLUB: The Tarpons' pitching staff became the first to reach 1,000 strikeouts in the Florida State League this season. Tampa leads the league in strikeouts, totaling 1,150K entering today. That is 76K more than the team ranked second (Clearwater - 1,074). Tampa is averaging 9.27K-per-game and is on pace for 1,298K, which would beat its own FSL single-season strikeout record set last season with 1,215K.
STRIKEOUTS FOR A CAUSE: The Tarpons have partnered with the American Cancer Society. Throughout the month of August, each time a strikeout is recorded by a Tampa pitcher, money will be raised for cancer research. The Tarpons are asking fans to donate $1.00 for every time a Tampa pitcher strikes out an opposing batter in the 31 games scheduled for August. BABY BOMBERS: The Tarpons currently lead the league with 95 home runs. No other team has more than 89.
GARCIA NAMED FSL PITCHER OF THE WEEK: On Monday, the Florida State League named RHP Deivi Garcia the latest FSL Pitcher of the Week. The 19-year-old tied a career-high with 12 strikeouts over 7.0 perfect innings in a no-decision vs. Clearwater in Game 2 of a doubleheader on Monday, August 6th. Garcia joins RHP Jonathan Loaisiga (April 5th-15th) as Tarpons to have received the award in 2018.
FOR STARTERS: RHP Rony Garcia (0-3, 4.09) will make his seventh start with Tampa. Last time out, took a no-decision at Palm Beach on 8/13 (5.0IP, 8H, 4ER, 1BB, 1K, 96P/68S)...Began the season with the RiverDogs, going 3-4 with a 4.18 ERA (71.IP, 73H, 44R/33ER, 13BB, 62S, 5HR, 6HB) in 14 starts...promoted to Tampa on 7/13.
2017: Combined at Rookie-level Pulaski and Single-A Charleston to go 2-3 with a 2.50 ERA (75.2IP, 63H, 29R/21ER, 17BB, 56K, 4HR) in 13 starts...opponents hit .225 (63-for-280)...allowed 3ER-or-fewer in each of his 13 starts...started the season with Pulaski, posting a 3.97 ERA (11.1IP, 11H, 7R/5ER, 2BB, 11K, 1HR) in two starts...was promoted to Charleston on 7/5 and went 2-3 with a 2.24 ERA (64.1IP, 53H, 22R/16ER, 15BB, 45K, 3HR) in 11 starts.
