Loggers Outlast Chucks, Win 10-9 in Ten

LA CROSSE - The Wisconsin Woodchucks and La Crosse Loggers battled for six hours and twenty-four minutes, through rain, thunder, and lightning, before the Loggers finally pulled off the victory on a walk-off base hit in the tenth inning.

After the two teams traded zeroes in the first, Brendon Hayden blasted a ball just over the right field wall over the glove of right fielder Bobby Juan for his first home run of the season to give the Woodchucks a 1-0 lead.

The Loggers would not wait long to answer the Woodchuck lead, as they added a home run of their own in the bottom of the second. Juan lead off for the Loggers and drove the first pitch he saw from Woodchuck starter JD Davis over the wall in center to tie the game up at one. The Loggers would add another run in the inning when Joe Meggs scored on a two-out single by Brenden Farney to put the Loggers on top 2-1.

The Woodchucks continued the back-and-forth affair as they retook the lead with a pair of runs in the third. With the bases loaded and one out, Levi Meyer singled to left, scoring Brooks Braga and Gage Green to put the Woodchucks back on top 3-2.

The Loggers would answer right back in the bottom of the third with a pair of their own runs. After an error by Chevas Numata extended the inning, a two-run single by Brandon Bednar scored Austin Bailey and Matt Chapman to give the Loggers a 4-3 lead.

Once again, the Woodchucks answered back in the fourth, this time in grand fashion. After a Gage Green walk with the bases loaded tied the game up, Hayden blasted his second home run of the game, this one a grand slam, to put the "˜Chucks on top 8-4.

The Loggers would cut into the Woodchuck lead in the bottom of the fourth as the offensive explosion continued. Joe Meggs lead the inning off with a single and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Boomer Collins to make it an 8-5 Woodchuck lead.

After the Woodchucks were held scoreless in the fifth, the first scoreless half inning since the bottom of the first, the Loggers would get back on the board in the bottom of the inning. After a lead-off walk to Juan, Brandon Bednar hit a two-run homer to deep center field to make it an 8-7 Woodchuck lead.

The Woodchucks would add an insurance run in the sixth, but then the heavens opened, unleashing a torrential downpour that left the entirety of foul territory under water. The game was delayed, unofficially, two hours and forty-five minutes before resuming at 11:00.

Once play resumed, the Loggers immediately loaded the bases against Zach Wendorf, aided by two walks and a hit batter. With two down, Keaton Aldridge hit a ball to third, the throw from Hayden to Numata was low, allowing two runs to score, only one of which was earned, to tie the game at nine.

The game stayed tied at nine through the ninth, forcing the second straight extra innings ball game for the "˜Chucks. In the bottom of the tenth, with runners on first and second, Matt Chapman got an RBI single to score Boomer Collins from second and give the Loggers 10-9 victory in ten innings.

The two teams will square off again tomorrow at Copeland Park at 5:05.
