Lancaster Stormers News Release
In the first home meeting against the rivals from across the river, it took two Lancastrians, Aaron Herr and Eric Ackerman to produce a 3-1 win over the York Revolution Thursday evening in front of 4,894 at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
With the victory, the Barnstormers take a six-games-to-one lead over the York Revolution in the 2009 version of the War of the Roses with three more to play on Prince Street over the upcoming holiday weekend.
Ackerman (3-5) worked seven strong innings to pick up his first win since May 8. The left-hander allowed six hits and one run while walking one and fanning five. Herr was his main backer with a pair of doubles in the latter innings that helped to produce all three Barnstormers runs.
York reached Ackerman for its only run in the first. Keoni DeRenne singled to center with one out and moved up on a grounder to second by P.J. Rose. Tom Collaro worked ahead in the count before ripping a single to center, scoring DeRenne for the 1-0 lead. Ackerman gave up a leadoff single to Matt Esquivel in the second then settled down to retire nine in a row and 14 of the next 16 batters.
Lancaster struggled against former Barnstormers left-hander Shane Youman, failing to score off the former Pittsburgh Pirate in the first five innings. In the process, the Barnstormers left six runners on base and had one man, Michael Campbell thrown out at the plate in the fifth on a single by Lloyd Turner.
However, Youman's pitch count climbed toward 100 and he was replaced by Jason Olson in the sixth. Gerard Haran led off with a walk and went to third on Herr's first double, a drive over the head of Matt Esquivel in left. Olson retired Jed Morris on a ground ball to first, but Bryan Sabatella muscled a single to left, scoring Haran to tie the game. Ryan Mulhern walked to load the bases, but Olson fanned the next two batters to keep the game deadlocked at 1-1.
Ackerman found trouble in the seventh. Jason Aspito greeted him with a double to right, and Esquivel walked. After a visit to the mound by pitching coach Bill Bliss, the left-hander struck out Matt Padgett, got Josh Johnson to ground out to second and fanned newcomer Carl Loadenthal to end the threat.
The Barnstormers picked up the deciding runs in the bottom of the inning. David Housel walked and moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Michael Woods. Travis Phelps (0-3) induced Haran to pop out, but Herr reached him for his second straight towering double to left for a 2-1 lead. Morris beat out a single to the hole at shortstop and Sabatella walked to load the bases. With Mulhern batting, Phelps missed badly outside with an 0-1 pitch, allowing Herr to score for the 3-1 lead.
Ross Peeples worked a scoreless eighth, and Antonio Alfonseca pinned the tying runs in scoring position in the ninth to earn his first save.
The Barnstormers and York meet again on Friday night with Jimmy and the Parrots, a Jimmy Buffett cover band performing in front of the stadium beginning at 5:00. Specially designed Hawaiian-style jerseys will be auctioned off with the proceeds going to SALSA baseball and Play Ball USA. Lancaster will send Jason Scobie (3-3) to the mound against Corey Thurman (3-3). Game time is 7:00.
NOTES: Ackerman's ERA dropped to 3.34 with his performance...Opponents played errorless baseball for the sixth straight game...Morris kept his average above .300 with a pair of hits...Lancaster needs 11 wins in the season series to recapture the Community Cup.
