Camden Riversharks News Release
The Camden Riversharks defeated the Newark Bears today, by a final score of 8-2. The win was given to Camden pitcher Tom Davey (7-2), who allowed 2 runs on 8 hits in 7 innings of work, while striking out a whopping 10 batters. Newark's pitcher Shane Komine (2-3) was charged with a loss, giving up 4 runs, and 6 hits in 4.2 innings. With the win, the Riversharks' season tally improves to 28-35, while Newark's falls to 33-31.
The Riversharks jumped out to an early lead in this contest, courtesy of some clutch hitting. With two outs already in the books, designated hitter Jose Leon safely reached first base with an infield hit. The next batter was Jon Knott, who doubled to left field and advanced Leon to third. With two runners in scoring position, first baseman Vito Chiaravolloti lined a single into left field, driving home Leon and Knott, and giving the Riversharks a 2-0 lead.
Newark pulled back a run in the top of the third, and cut Camden's lead in half. Center fielder Tike Redman reached first base with an infield single. The next batter was second baseman Andres Perez, who tripled to center field, driving in Redman, and making the score 2-1. The Bears then drew even in the 5th inning, as an RBI double by Perez again plated Redman, and tied the game.
The Sharks answered right back in the bottom of the fifth, and retook the lead. Center fielder Wayne Lydon drew a leadoff walk, stole second base, and then advanced to third on a throwing error by Newark catcher Salomon Manriguez. He then scored when shortstop Bryant Nelson doubled to right field, giving Camden a 3-2 lead. Three batters later, Chiaravollotti stepped to the plate and picked up his third RBI of the game when he singled to center field and drove home Nelson, extending the home team's lead.
Camden tacked on an additional run in the 6th inning, and extended their lead to 5-2. After a leadoff double by catcher Jason Jacobs, Chris Walker knocked a single to right field, and drove home Jacobs.
The Riversharks tacked on two more runs in the bottom of 8th inning, when Knott ripped a liner off the glove off Newark's Felix Martinez. The error would score both Chris Walker and Nelson. The scoring continued for Camden when third baseman Brett Bonvechio slapped a pitch over the head of a leaping Andres Perez for Camden's 8th run of the contest.
In the 9th inning, the game was put on the arm of reliever Michael Flannery, who tamed the Bears' chances, whilst locking down an 8-2 Riversharks' victory.
The Riversharks and Bears will play game two of their four game series tomorrow at 7:05pm. Right-handed pitcher Dewon Brazelton (2-4, 3.50) will take the hill for the Sharks, and will be opposed by lefty Matt Melody (0-0, 6.75) of Newark. Limited seating for the game is still available.
