(Rochester, NY)... Rochester Knighthawks forward Joe Walters and Rochester Americans captain Rory Fitzpatrick both grew up in Rochester and still call the city their home. Today, they took a step forward to help the environment of their hometown.

Walters and Fitzpatrick attended a kickoff for SUBWAY'S "Subs for Cell Phones" campaign at HSBC Plaza. The Rochester natives were among VIPs attending the event, which included Brother Wease and the staff from the Brother Wease Show at 95.1 FM The Fox.

"I think it's a clever way of SUBWAY© to influence people to do something so small that can go a long way," said Walters. "It is very cool that SUBWAY© reached out that way to help the environment."

"It's important to get more involved in recycling," said Fitzpatrick. "Anything we can do to get people to recycle is a wonderful thing."

SUBWAY© has partnered with Rock the Earth, a leading environmental advocacy group; Water Street Music Hall, Gibson Guitar and Brother Wease from 95.1 The Fox to hold a major cell phone recycling campaign here, beginning Friday, December 11th. The Amerks and Knighthawks have been a partner of the East Main Street SUBWAY© location for the past two seasons.

The campaign begins the same night the Amerks return home to host the Abbotsford Heat in an American Hockey League contest at 7:05 p.m. at The Blue Cross Arena. Amerks and Knighthawks fans can stop at the SUBWAY© restaurant at 31 East Main Street prior to the game and receive a free sub with the donation of a cell phone.

Customers dropping off a used cell phone at any participating SUBWAY© store in Rochester will receive a free regular 6" sandwich (excludes premium subs, and those donating will receive only one free sub no matter how many phones are donated). The goal of the campaign, which runs from Friday, December 11th to Sunday, December 13th; is to increase the number of properly recycled cell phones, since less than 10 percent are disposed of correctly.

"An improperly recycled cell phone has the potential to contaminate 40,000 gallons of drinking water. The phone contains toxic substances that can enter the ecosystem when taken to landfills or incinerated," said Rock the Earth Executive Director Shawn Kilmurray. Rock the Earth is a non-profit organization committed to protecting and defending America's natural resources through partnerships with the music industry and the worldwide environmental community. Visit www.RockTheEarth.org for more information.

Those donating will also receive an electronic coupon good for 20 percent off items purchased from Musictoday. In addition, they will also be registered to win great prizes* including: tickets to Rochester Knighthawks and Rochester Americans games, a Gibson Les Paul SG special guitar (retail value $1,600), concert tickets to Water Street Music Hall, overnight suite for two and dinner at Radisson Hotel Rochester Riverside, CDs, signed artist memorabilia, DVDs, and more.

"We have organized a meaningful recycling campaign with enthusiastic, community-minded partners," said Joe Franch, Rochester franchisee board chairman. "SUBWAY© customers are incredible and we anticipate a large turn-out. For their support, we want to reward them and we believe what we are offering will be well-received."
