Moose, Red River College Once Again Team Up For "Respond To Reading"

December 8, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Manitoba Moose News Release

The Manitoba Moose are once again pleased to announce they have partnered with Red River College to launch the "Respond to Reading" program designed to positively encourage children in grades kindergarten to five to develop their interest in reading.

Today, Moose Captain Mike Keane and Nolan Baumgartner kicked off the 'Respond to Reading' program by visiting the Grade Three classes at WHYTE RIDGE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL (400 Scurfield Blvd) at 2:00 PM. Keane and Baumgartner read "The Moccasin Goalie" to a group of classes numbering over 110 students and answered any and all questions from the children, as well as signed autographs.

This exciting program offers unique incentive prizes for the students including the opportunity to have Manitoba Moose players visit the school classrooms in February. Last year, over 40 classrooms participated in this program with great response from teachers and students alike.

Here is how "Respond to Reading" works for all schools:

* Teachers review the interactive workbooks to determine if they'd like their class to participate. There are three versions of the workbook available; Grades K-1, 2-3 and 4-5. To print off the appropriate workbook, please visit www.mosehockey.com/readingprogram. Kids, be sure to encourage your teachers to participate!

* Teachers then email Barrett Paulsen at bpaulsen@moosehockey.com to sign up their class.

* As part of the program, students must read a book of their choice, and in turn, complete their respective workbook. * Once all workbooks are completed by their class, as well as a Teacher's Report, an explanation as to why a Manitoba Moose player should visit their class should also be submitted by fax to 204-926-5555 by Monday, February 1st, 2010 at 4:30 p.m. * All participating classes will be entered into a draw to have two Moose players visit their class on Wednesday, February 10th. The players will read "The Moccasin Goalie" which is a book based on overcoming obstacles. * In addition to the player visits, each participating class will also have the opportunity to win one of many possible prize packages from the Manitoba Moose and Red River College.

If you require additional information on this customized reading program, please contact Barrett Paulsen at 204-926-5578. Moose fans can get tickets to all individual Manitoba Moose games including the annual New Year's Eve game vs. the Texas Stars at 4:00 p.m. OR the annual "Holiday Hat-Trick" ticket package by calling the Manitoba Moose ticket office at 987-7825 or by going online at www.moosehockey.com.
