Lloyd Delivers Stellar Outing in Sod Poodles Win

July 3, 2019 - Texas League (TL1)
Amarillo Sod Poodles News Release

Midland, Texas - Sod Poodles right-hander Kyle Lloyd delivered a sensational outing on Wednesday night, leading Amarillo to a 4-1 victory behind seven strong innings of one-run ball at Security Bank Ballpark. Amarillo won the final game of the three-game set against the Midland RockHounds.

Lloyd began the ballgame with four perfect innings, before walking and allowing a single to the first two batters of the fifth. Lloyd maneuvered his way out of trouble in the frame to make it five scoreless innings.

The game was scoreless in the third, when Brad Zunica smashed a solo home run into the right field bullpen to give Amarillo a 1-0 lead. The blast was Zunica's 12th of the campaign and came off Midland starter Grant Holmes.

In the fifth, Zunica delivered again. Taylor Kohlwey walked to begin the frame against Midland lefty A.J. Puk, and then swiped second base. Zunica drove him in with an RBI single on a ground ball up the middle of the diamond. Amarillo led 2-0.

The Soddies extended the lead to 3-0 in the seventh on Hudson Potts' RBI double against righty Daulton Jefferies.

Lloyd, who struck out a season-high eight hitters, would allow just an unearned run in the seventh. It was his first outing of seven complete innings this season.

In the top of the eighth, Ivan Castillo looped an RBI single to right field to extend Amarilloo's lead to 4-1. Castillo replaced Owen Miller in the top of the inning at second base, after Miller was hit by a pitch. He stayed in the game to run the bases and scored on Potts' double.

Sod Poodles manager Phillip Wellman turned to righty Evan Miller in the eighth. Miller, who recorded ten saves at High-A Lake Elisnore earlier this season, retired all six batters he faced in the eighth and ninth innings.

Miller struck out four hitters en route to his first Texas League save.

The Sod Poodles snapped Midland's five-game win streak. Amarillo has won four of their last six games.

The Sod Poodles return home for the start of a four-game series against the Frisco RoughRiders on Thursday night for a July 4th weekend celebration. First pitch at HODGETOWN is at 7:05 p.m.

Amarillo sends right-hander Lake Bachar to the hill, while Frisco counters with righty Jason Bahr. The game is aired on 940 AM KIXZ, MiLB TV, and various streaming platforms with coverage beginning at 6:45 p.m.
