Kitchener Rangers News Release
Darby Llewellyn's shorthanded goal was the game winner as the Kitchener Rangers defeated the Barrie Colts 4-3 on Friday night. Curtis Meighan, Ryan MacInnis and Nick Magyar also scored to help the Rangers to victory.
The Colts opened the scoring, taking advantage of a first period power play opportunity. Third-year winger Brendan Lemieux deflected a long shot from Swedish rearguard Rasmus Andersson past Rangers starter Matthew Greenfield to record his fifth goal of the season. Andrew Mangiapane also picked up an assist on the power play marker at 6:53.
Barrie out-shot Kitchener 7-6 through the opening 20 minutes of play.
Overage centre Curtis Meighan pulled the Rangers even early in the first period, firing a quick shot past the elbow of netminder Jordan DeKort for his first of the season. Meighan scored a career high 11 goals in 2013-14, and has points in two of his last three outings. Third year winger Justin Bailey extended his point streak to a seventh game with a helper on the play. The second assist was credited to Brent Pedersen.
Justin Scott quickly restored the Colts' one goal advantage, jumping on a rebound in front of the Rangers net and snapping it past the paddle of Greenfield. His seventh of the year was assisted Kevin Lebanc.
Two minutes later, Kitchener erased the deficit when Ryan MacInnis snapped a long shot past the paddle of former teammate DeKort, picking up his third of the season. The Arizona Coyotes prospect sits second in team scoring with nine points, and has appeared on the scoresheet in six of his last seven games. Rearguards Max Iafrate and Dmitrii Sergeev earned helpers on the play.
A second goal on the man-advantage put the Colts back in front with 12 minutes remaining in the frame. Team-scoring leader Joseph Blandisi fired a shot that ricocheted off the goal post and onto the stick of Leblanc. The sophomore forward's power play tally was his third of the season, and his second point of the game. Lemieux also earned his second point of the night with an assist on the goal.
The Rangers dominated shots on goal 19-8 in the middle frame.
Sophomore Nick Magyar's third goal in two games knotted the score at 3-3 with just over 12 minutes left to play. Rookie Adam Mascherin dug the puck out of the corner and fed it to the Colorado Avalanche prospect, who lifted a shot high-glove side past DeKort. Mascherin has four assists in his last two games, and sits third in team scoring with seven points. Import forward Gustaf Franzen also picked up a helper on the play, extending his recent point streak to a third game.
Kitchener took its first lead of the contest with less than eight minutes remaining on the clock. With the team shorthanded, Darby Llewellyn chipped the puck out of the Rangers zone and raced the length of the ice, outmuscling the defenceman in front of the net and shoveling a backhand shot over the pad of DeKort. The unassisted tally was the Ann Arbor, MI native's second of the season.
The Rangers led shots on goal 16-11 in the third period, and finished with a 41-26 overall advantage.
Kitchener's second consecutive win improves the team's record to 4-3-0-1.
