Oshawa Generals News Release
The Generals hit home ice again tonight, taking on the Sarnia Sting. The Generals were hot off of a 7-1 win over the Ottawa 67's on Monday, Oct. 13, and the Sting also coming off of a win over the Peterborough Petes last night, Oct. 16. Both teams arrived looking to keep their pattern of winning alive, however it would be the Generals who kept the win streak alive tonight with a 6-4 win over the Sting.
The Generals 6-4 win over the Sting tonight marks their sixth consecutive win on home ice - the team haven't lost on home ice yet this season. Despite a slow first period which failed to provide much action, things picked up instantly in the second period. Kenny Appleby made a strong effort in goal tonight, blocking 21 of the 25 shots made by the Sting. Appleby is now 7-0 this season.
The first period saw a handful of penalties from each side and plenty of good scoring chances from the Generals. Templeton took the first penalty of the game on a cross-checking call, but the Sting couldn't put any goals in the net. Jacob Busch took a high stick late in the first, drawing blood, but no call was made. With just over a minute to go in the first period, Spinozzi headed to the penalty box for interference. Michael Dal Colle followed shortly after on a tripping call. With only 2.5 seconds remaining in the period, DeAngelo of the Sting took an interference pently, ending the period with a 4 on 3 for the Generals.
The second period began with the Generals on a power play and Hunter Smith wasted no time, burying a goal from a beautiful pass from Cole Cassesls. After a few more penalties for each side, Cassels tried to make something happen on a shorthanded breakaway but couldn't put it past Fazio. Aidan Wallace would be next to score for the Generals, burying a goal assisted by Tobias Lindberg. On the Generals fourth power play of the night, Mitchell Vande Sompel earned his first goal of the season, scoring from the blue line, assisted from Cassels, giving the Generals a 3-0 lead over the Sting. Kodola had a break away chance nearing the end of the second period, but Appleby denied him the scoring chance. Second period ended with Generals outshooting the Sting 25-15 and leading the game 3-0.
The third period was a wild one and the pace of the game increased drastically from the first period. Following a Generals penalty for too many men on the ice, Tampa Bay Lightning drafted player, Anthony DeAngelo scored the first Sting goal of the night. The goal was assisted by Pavel Zacha and Davis Brown. The Generals would strike back though as Josh Sterk scored a power play goal, assisted by Chris Carlisle and Michael Dal Colle. The Generals now lead the Sting 4-1. They wouldn't stop there though, as Jacob Busch scored his second goal of the season, giving the Generals a 5-1 advantage.
Despite the Generals holding a strong lead over the Sting, Sarnia did not give up, pushing hard to try and redeem themselves. Pavel Zacha scored his third goal of the season to narrow the Generals lead to 5-2. The sixth goal of the game came shortly after and it was a beauty, scored shorthanded by Bradley Latour on a breakaway. Hayden Hodgson answered the Generals goal, scoring the third Sting goal of the night. The Sting kept the pressure strong and scored their fourth goal of the night, this time from Nikita Korostelev with just over a minute remaining in the third. The Generals found another win tonight, defeating the Sarnia Sting 6-4 and earning another two points.
Despite a strong effort from the Sting, the Generals once again proved why they are holding strong as the first place team in the Eastern Conference.
