Lindsay Whalen Named as Replacement Player for "WNBA vs. USA Basketball: Stars at the Sun"

MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL - WNBA President Donna Orender today announced that Lynx guard Lindsay Whalen will replace Becky Hammon on the WNBA roster for the "WNBA vs. USA Basketball: Stars at the Sun" game to be played tomorrow, Saturday, July 10 in Uncasville, Conn. and televised on ESPN, beginning at 2:30 p.m. CT. Whalen will also participate in the Three-Point Contest and Skills Challenge portions of the Pregame Challenge, which will take place prior to The Stars at the Sun game and streamed live on www.wnba.com. The Lynx now have two players participating in the game, including Rebekkah Brunson, the WNBA's third-leading rebounder (10.5 rpg), who was voted to the WNBA squad earlier this week by the league's head coaches.

In her first season with the Lynx, Whalen ranks fourth in the WNBA in assists per game, averaging a team-leading 5.0 apg. The 5-9 guard has dished out at least five assists on nine occasions, including a WNBA season-high 12 assists on June 18 vs. Tulsa. Whalen handed out her 1,000th career assist on June 10 at Phoenix to become just the eighth player (third-youngest) in league history to register 1,000+ assists.

In 16 games this season, Whalen has posted averages of 10.8 points, 3.8 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 1.3 steals in 32.5 minutes per game. The seven-year veteran has scored in double-figures a team-leading 11 times, and led the Lynx in assists in 13 contests. Additionally, her 3.8 rebounds per game leads all WNBA point guards. Earlier this season Whalen extended her consecutive made free throw steak to 54 (dating back to 2009 season), the second-longest such streak in league history. For the season, Whalen is hitting on a career-best .932 percent (68-of-73) from the line, currently the fourth-highest percentage in the league.

Tomorrow will mark Whalen's third WNBA All-Star Game appearance. In 2004, her rookie year, Whalen was voted onto the WNBA roster that competed in The Game at Radio City between the U.S. Olympic Team and the WNBA All-Stars. Whalen made her first career start in the All-Star game in 2006, totaling 10 points, 6 assists and 5 rebounds in 25 minutes.

Whalen will fill the spot on the WNBA squad vacated by Becky Hammon of San Antonio. Hammon suffered a quadriceps injury in last night's 89-66 Lynx win at Target Center.
