Lincoln Scores Early and Often to Take Game Three from Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS, SD- The Lincoln Saltdogs (16-29) scored at least one run in the first three out of four innings to jump on the Canaries on Wednesday afternoon. Sioux Falls (20-25) could never catch up as they dropped game three by a final of 9-1 in front of 3,219 fans at Sioux Falls Stadium.

Sioux Falls starter Shawn Blackwell's day didn't go as planned after he gave up a two run blast to Curt Smith in the bottom of the first inning. Lincoln answered with three more runs in the top of the third when Matt Forgatch scored on a wild pitch and Jeremy Hamilton hit an RBI double. Brian Joynt was due up next and followed with another RBI double as Lincoln took a 5-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth Lincoln put two runners on base and ultimately Jeremy Hamilton scored on a Curt Smith single. The Canaries would answer in the bottom half of the inning when Brian Humphries hit a towering homerun over the right field wall.

Tyler Pearson came onto relief in the top of the seventh for Shawn Blackwell. In the end, Blackwell threw six innings on nine hits while giving up six earned runs. In the later part of the game, Lincoln scored in the top of the seventh, eighth and ninth innings. In the top of the seventh Lincoln picked up a run from a Ryan Wiggins RBI single followed by a hard hit RBI single by Brian Joynt in the top of the eighth. Finally, in the top of the ninth Eddie Young scored on a wild pitch from Pearson.

Lincoln starter Shairon Martis (3-1, 3.41 ERA) picked up his third win of the year as he tossed seven innings on six hits while allowing only one earned run.

The Canaries will send Miguel Pena (5-3, 2.57 ERA) to the mound in search of his team leading sixth win on Thursday evening. Thursday will feature on weekly "Thirsty Thursday" presented by Mid-States Audio and Video. Sioux Falls players will be wearing military themed jerseys. Come out to the ballpark for Cagey's pre-game tailgate party beginning at 5 PM. Beers are just $1 when gates open. All military men and women will receive a discounted price on tickets when they show their military I.D.
